Bangalore: Entry of an IITian to politics sparks mixed responses from IIT alumni. RK Misra, an IIT-Kanpur alumnus has received nearly 600 e-mails from IITians after joining the BJP on Saturday. "Since yesterday I have received 600 mails in which most are congratulatory, but there are those that border on being nasty," Misra told DNA.

Misra believes that his decision to join BJP has sparked off a pan-IIT discussion. Misra, a social entrepreneur for five years had earlier won a leadership campaign organized by a media group. Egged on by friends, Misra now attempts to provide responses to each of the e-mails received.

The Bangalore chapter of IIT-Bombay's Yahoo group entered the debate vigorously on March 24. "I felt let down that RK Misra joined the BJP. He was supposed to be a leader, instead he became a follower. I have written to him expressing my disappointment, and await his reply," said Dr. Samir Kelekar, IIT-Bombay alumnus.

Meanwhile some of the IITians favor Misra's move, thinking it commendable that an IITian should enter politics. Saumil Majumdar, one of the moderators of the IIT-Bombay's Bangalore alumni Yahoo group opined, "Misra is one of us, so the intensity of the discussion is high. What he has done is commendable." "If we don't stand up and do what is required of us in the political sphere and in governance, can we complain?," asks Majumdar.

If more n more educated youth join politics one day politics will bcome a respectable profession. Moreover we are also responsible to our country.

3: I am glad that Mr. Misra has taken the plunge , but i am unable to wish you any sucess, as your decision to join BJP is such a joke... we all saw what they did in their 6 years of power. I really credited you with more independence.

Professional Party of India has a very mediocre program. Its program is just a collection of middle class complaints. I'm afraid they completely lack the sense and understanding of the country and the world.

7: I congratulate first to RK Misra for entering into politics. I am also disappointed in the similar way as Dr Samir that in spite of leading a party of his own he chose to join BJP. I don't think he can do much value addition to anything by being with BJP. One thing is sure that his chances of winning the election has increased. It's a safe game but I disagree to play a safe game to implement the morality in the society. Just not BJP, its all the Political party in Power in India are corrupt from their roots. They don't have real goal for the progress but most of them think at very superficial level. Everyone think to give benefits to only few people in the society to make them further rich.

I saw some comments from my fellow alumni who said its hopeless to start its own party, so I want to tell them that there is no progress without struggle. We should stand to create an example in the society. We should stand to realize the society on how a moralist leader can take the society towards progress rather than compromising with our Agenda to be in Power. I won't be surprised to see that our Misraji will need an endorsements from most corrupt leaders in BJPs to win the election. Isn't funny that we think we can bring changes by allying with corrupt people in the society.

All the best from my side as I know you'll win the election by propagandizing that you are an IITian a so called intellectual who has joined a great political party of India. You may be also in position to help other non-deserving candidates to win the election by the name of an IIT. I would be pleased to see what will your agenda for the progress in the society and how much you will in position to fulfill them after winning the election.

What society are you talking about. Are you talking about the society that sells its votes for free TVs, free electricity, 500 rupee notes, or biryani packets. Do you think Shri Mishra has even an iota of chance if he goes alone or through some no-name party? The average size of a lok sabha constituency is around 7.5 lakh people. How can anyone try to reach and convince people of such magnitude without any prior background. The reality is starkly different on the streets from what one can see from the arm chair. The polity is ill-informed, they dont know what is good for them and the nation (thanks to the media for not doing their job), because of all these the polity is not ready (this may be wrong in some pockets of India) for people like Shri Mishra to go out on their own and make a difference. Ultimately, the representative is the reflection of the electorate he represents.

So looking at all this, BJP is a lighter shade of grey, it is young, it is malleable, and supports meritocracy. So if you want to make a difference join it and change it from within as you want.

9: CONGRATS to both Misra & Majumdar for offering the sanctity of top notch intellect to politics what India badly needs in face of the present generation of political honchos fading out.At least for these guys going to the US or other Western nations is not a dream.Hope lot of others will follow the trigger. But a straight WARning to the goons. please don't destroy these prodigal kids that Mother India have produced.FOR GODS SAKE PLEASE protect them and nurture them for they are national wealth ahead of the tendulkars, shetty's, bachhans and khans and will develop the country by brick and mortar. But one thing is that they should not be made politically aligned.

13: It would have been healthier if he had stood as an independent. I am sure that the whole IIT fraternity would have supported him.
Now, he will dance to the tune of the likes of Rajnath Singh and the whole bandwagon.
The same is the case of Kalra who has joined BSP.
All these people should stand as independents. The the mass who is fed up of these corrupt politicians will support them. Further, Swami Ramdeo and his "Bharat Swabhiman" movement will also support them. They may lose one or two elections, but the new generation politician would be honest.

I would say all these intellectuals should form a separate political party. And also i am requesting Management graduates from elite business schools please join politics,
You guys are managing a Department or a Corporate over here in politics you have an opportunity to manage a Nation. INDIA needs you in politics as well.

You guys are day dreaming. In the present circumstances, a separate political party is a waste. All the votes that go to such parties will be wasted for the next 15-20 years. So choose the lesser of the evils and try to course correct them from within. BJP provides a good platform for good people to join and change it from within. No other party provides such a platform currently.
