PUNE: 80 of the world's top scientists meet in Pune to decide how and where to set up the world's biggest radio telescope.

The SKA or a Square Kilometer Array Radio Telescope Project is a $1 billion initiative.

The aim - to explore the unknown and go where no telescope has gone before.

"There are many questions which don't have easy answers. This telescope will tell us what was there before the stars," said Pramesh Rao, Dean, NCRA, Pune.

But the telescope needs an area of one million square kilometers - an area with no radio interference.

This area will have to be declared a no development zone, which virtually rules out any place in India.

The sites now under consideration lie in Argentina, Australia, China and South Africa.

But India is playing a key role in the actual construction process.

Indeed the Pune conference assumes great significance for the radio astronomers from across the world in their quest for unexpected and exciting discoveries.
