IIMs' high salary: The true story has a twist
Bangalore: As 2010 placement session of all the seven IIMs draws to close, it is being witnessed that the role offered to these graduates are more or less traditional and the salary packages are different than the packages which were making the buzz, reports Economic Times.
Following the placement session getting over, the debate started across the corner that which institute managed the best offer? An IIM-Ahmedabad student was tipped to have bagged an offer for Rs 1.4 crore two weeks ago, which has reportedly been breached by the Rs 1.6 crore offer made by a British investment bank at IIM-Calcutta.

But seeing these eye-popping numbers that have dominated headlines for some weeks, Saral Mukherjee, Placement Chief at the IIM-A said, "The truth is that the readers are being fed garbage" said Saral Mukherjee, Placement Chief at IIM-A.
This year, it has been totally different scenario, as the average salary offered by international banks at the IIM campuses are in the range of
12-20 lakh per annum, while that offered by private sector banks is at just over
9 lakh for IIM graduates. The top 30 percent were offered packages of
12-15 lakh, the next 40 percent get salaries in the range of
8-12 lakh and the remaining 30 percent get offers between
5-8 lakh.
Supporting the range of salary being offered, K Ramkumar, Executive Director at ICICI Bank said, "For a person with less than three years of experience, whoever is paying more than Rs 15 lakh is doing a disservice to their organization." ICICI Bank has picked up 50 students from various IIMs so far this year.
It looks really bad to see that how wide is the gap between the lucky few with '
1 crore-plus' salaries and the rest of the crop from the same elite campuses who are stuck with salaries of Rs 50,000 per month.

2:Every one bragging upon the money part, how
much salary they get, tax and shit. That is
all I come across when I read the comments
below. Some people commenting think they know
all the things that happens around the world.
All you guys out there, just for a second
look at the bigger picture and try to
understand whether this debate is needed or
not. Its wastage of time and energy. If you
want to discuss about anything than talk
about the 'BRAIN DRAIN' that is happening.

The truth is that in IIM's hardly 2% get the mouth watering salaries. But still only this is publicised. The salaries of the rest of the batch which is actually low/average never comes out in the press. The frustrating fact is that all the students pay the same amount for their education at IIM's(fees are really high) but still there is a huge difference in salary.
The truth should come out before the public about the actual salary that the majority of the students get.
IIMB has had the worst placement cell.

The avge package which we r getting here is very less.The Placements data provided to media is all fake . Freshers at top IIM's just get 6-8 lakhs p.a., the B.E/BTech get better with 8-9 lpa while the ones with 3+ years of work exp only get 10-15 lakhs p.a .The placements at IIM-A,B,C etc have always been goofed up.
For instance someone who gets Rs 15 lakhs pa package first of all he is B.Tech+ 3-4 yrs wk-exp and then there is a variable component(including bonus) of 7 lakhs in the 15 lakhs package.
This means he is just getting a fixed salary of Rs 8 lakhs p.a.
After tax deductions a guy with 15 lakhs p.a.( 8 is fixed rest is variable) just gets
a inhand of Rs 53K per month .Thus the media hype about IIM's is just an eyewash.
Please stop trusting IIM salaries and news on TV/newspapers/ articles etc.
Supreme court should take legal action against IIM's for misleading people and givning false information to media,

they get is bcoz of few people really
performing. The rest get the advantage of the
network. Once a IIM fellow is at the helm, he
would always go to his alma mater and select
few for high salaries. Now question is, are
companies doing business or charity? True,
they are doing business. But only few of
these high salaried doesn't constitute the
company. There are many low salaried people
who are also contributing. So, when as a team
the going is well, the individual
performances are not so much scrutinized. In
IIM also, those who get selected are not all
graduation toppers or IIT'ians. Not all
IIT'ians appearing also make it. That itself
goes to say that, if the same entrance test
is taken again, ranks will change. Working
with few of these alumnis I got the feeling
that they only want to work in an exclusive
IIT/IIM environment. Few of them can't take
others drawing the same salary or getting a
promotion ahead of them. Sometimes they get
demotivated and can't perform when others
without these precious certificates are
charged up and perform better. One thing few
of them with such attitude problem need to
realize that IIT/IIM certificates can get
them a great first break. But there are many
others who are no less competant esp. when
it's not about rocket science. Sad part is
that our society thinks that higher the
salary, higher the merit, which is not always
true. My friend from IIT in late 90's got an
offer of hardly 90,000 per annum from L&T
in mumbai. Same person is drawing 60 odd lacs
per annum in investment banking now. IQ
didn't change, was already polished, got a
l'il bit more perhaps. Salary is not the only
index of talent or capability.

Why should this be any different for IIM graduates?
Like the guy below has said, even IIMA - whose placements chairman is preaching these things now - used to calculate students' placement packages in this way, until this year when apparently they have got a drubbing from IIM Calcutta.
Why is this wrong? It's obvious that the compensation structures in these companies which take these brilliant students are designed in this way, such that the fixed component is kept low and bonuses are kept intentionally high. And judging from the huge hue and cry from the issue of bank bonuses in the US recently, it's evident that these bonuses are not really "variable" in the traditional sense at all - the banks pay their employees these bonuses even if they go nearly bankrupt and have to get government money to stay solvent.
So, these bonuses and variable pay components which are parts of these huge salaries reported in the media - like the 1.6 crores one from IIM-C this year, or the 1.44 crores one the IIMA director proudly declared two years back - are perfectly legitimate and standard components of the salary. Just like Steve Jobs's and Eric Schmidt's salary. When we don't estimate the salaries of these executives as $1 or some such ridiculous amount, why should we do the same for IIM grads?

But actually he is posted in US so it is actually just 130,000 US $ Out of which 50,000 is very bonus+variable component. So all he gets is 80,000 US $ which after TAx is just 55,000 odd which is very less in New York kind of places.i.e 4,800 US$ left per month out of which he willl spend 3000 $ per month on food , accomodation, transport etc .At this salary he can only buy a second hand car and live in a 1 room shared apartment.So IIM's always churn outr false stories. DONT THINK IIMS ARE A BRAND. THEY ARE LIARS.

I got the above link from an IIM call getters thread on Pagalguy. The link is a news story from March 2008, it clearly shows the IIMA director (who is still the Director of IIMA) trumpeting the 1.44Crore salary - the highest salary of that year, I guess - of an IIMA student. And he proudly declares the high salaries of IIMA:-
"Top salary has been in the range of Rs 1.12 crore to Rs 1.44 crore, and this also counts a huge component of bonus, based on performance given after a year. But we can still say the highest salary was Rs 1.44 crore," said Mr Barua.
Now, this statement by the Director of IIMA is exactly the kind of thing what this Saral Mukherjee is now preaching against.
This clearly illustrates what many people have been saying in this thread: that these recent news reports and opinions by IIMA authorities is clearly just a case of SOUR GRAPES. IIMA was always the most enthusiastic institute to publicize their high salaries when they got the best salaries. Now, when their performance has not been that good, they are criticizing these salaries? This is hypocrisy at its worst.
I am from an institute which has never published its highest salaries publicly. Of course, we have never had placements as good as the IIMs, but at least we are not hypocritical as IIMA. Our institute probably can preach these sort of things, but IIMA has no moral right to say this now when they have performed badly in this year's placements.

personnel experience tells, a good academic
back ground is always beneficial, but thats
only 40%, think about the rest. U dont get

thirdly, ur college's little clarification in ur little "blog" is laughable. seriously, what is the readership of ur blog outside ur institute? 50 ppl? 100 ppl? after having headlines in Economic Times about a story, u think the story can be retracted by a tiny little "clarification"? puhlease. if u wanted, u cud have got ET to publish an official retraction - this is what ur college would have done if you really wanted ppl to know that the 1.44Cr story was not true. for example, this is exactly what u wud have done if the original story published was about something embarrassing for ur college - like a scandal or something.
ur huge leak, following by ur little clarification in a tiny little blog means absolutely nothing.
and of course, the other small unofficial leaks - matching the 1.5 Cr figure that iimb bagged later by another leak in hindustan times - even that wudn't have happened without ur college's knowledge.

India so that is not a big deal if the IIM

am not actually in favor of the packages

placement fiasco this year? Their placecom
forced out around 40 people from the
placement process on the 5th day and
announced to the world that the placement
process was "100% completed". The angry
students called an emergency General Body
Meeting of the student council on the next
day and fired the whole place com. The
administration took over the placements of
the remaining people then. I don't know
whether the placements are over there - it's
possible that the admin has actually finished
the process by now.
So, IIMB is not better, it's much, much worse. What the placement committee did is unforgivable. The E-GBM showed them the door, so hopefully this won't repeat in the future

figures, but it certainly doesn't represent
the real picture. Its not that I am trying to
defend IIM B, I agree that there were some
inefficiencies but definitely the whole batch
got placed. Nobody was forced out of the
placements, everybody got placed. The entire
fiasco is about the student blaming placement
committee for not getting their desired
profiles. Moreover student body did not fire
placecom, placecom resigned because after
working so hard, they were being blamed.

pressure to show the world that we are no.1
in placements at the price of student's
future, which is unacceptable. They were in
the rat race for which IIM places students
fasters. I don't know if thats the only
reason why they announce placement was "100%
completed". Thats why i mentioned that All
the IIM's Specially A,B & C should come
out of the Race. Also the placement does not
decide that you are the best IIM.

sentences. Infact with poor english there is
no way that one can clear the written test.
You can expect 98 plus percentile if you are
very strong in an area and above average in

These high-paying jobs are usually given to
extremely high-IQ students with superb
profiles - like IIT batch toppers who are
near the top of the batch in top B-schools.
Students with superb analytical skills. They
won't be put in people management positions
earlier on, they are not taken by companies
for that purpose. They are hired for their
brains, not their people management skills.
It's debatable whether such people should be
called "managers" in an ideal world, but hey,
a finance MBA is a finance MBA. And they
people make millions of dollars every year
for these companies, and get paid a small
fraction of that. It's not too unfair.

these kinds of salaries to grads from certain
B-schools. And these companies - Goldman
Sachs, UBS, Credit Suisse, Barcap, McK, BCG,

really think that these companies are stupid?
And yes, these students certainly are worth
it. The kind of rigorous admission criteria,
curriculum and training that are features of

there may be "typical" managers who can do
trading for a normal stock company, but
Morgan Stanley takes certain people for
trading desks in Hong Kong with ultra high
salaries simply because, they are that damn
good. Maybe, some day, you will be in a
position from where you can see if for
yourself. I myself am a student at a
not-so-bad MBA institute, and while I would
consider myself just a "typical" MBA student,
trust me, there are many, really superbly
brilliant students in my institute. And I am
absolutely sure that they deserve this kind
of money - 10 minutes of conversation with
them on a serious topic is enough to realize
that.

I asked this to an IIT Delhi branch topper who is a classmate, and his answer was that he joined IIT because of societal pressure, and later he decided that he wanted to pursue a different career line. ridiculing high IIM salaries.. On an average
these guys make lots of money.. Have you guys
heard about any of the top Hedge Fund
managers? Most of them started right out of
college.. So there goes the "Experience
Theory".. They make huge money and get
compensated accordingly.. If the amount of
work was the only criteria, a clerical job
would have to fetch more than any of the top
salary getters.. An employee's worth is
measured not by the quantum of work one does
but the amount of money an employee makes for
the firm.. So, while I am not saying that all
the non-IIM guys are nt equally good, I would
suggest, give credit where its due.. And most
of these guys deserve to be paid.. If they
didn't the firms would know pretty soon I
guess..

point is it should be. Excepr few exceptions,
who doesn't wanted to become his/her own boss
but they do not. The only reason they are
feared; 'What if I fails, what if loose

simply can't understand why these guys are
joining the other companies. In India, most
people feared to open new business not
because of revenues and/or fear to fail but
fear to loose everything. That is a negative
mentality. Although in recent past number of
successful entrepreneurs increased in India
but still most people fear to enter in a new
and unknown territory. At least from IIM,
advertised as most successful business school
of India, we must expect to produce
entrepreneurs but not salaried slaves that
any school/college in India can produce. At
least I'm not satisfied with the parameter to
evaluate IIM students. For me parameter is
how many students becomes entrepreneurs.

Sharma. These IIM's are actually proving the
Americans right, who once said, "Indians can
be good employees and not employers", and
most of these companies who employee these
IIM have some or other connection to Non
Indians. Why are we lacking the
entrepreneural skills. Some people like me do
not have the support for the same, people who
have suppport, do not want to be
entrepreneurs or do not have the skills to
make a mark. Business in india is mainly
percieved as the domain of few people. If
India has to be a global leader then its the
responsibility of every one to think in that
direction.

feel we are promoting the wrong people as
these people have done little for the country
by not promoting the entrepreneurial skills
unlike engineers. Considering the quantum of
salary paid to engineers which is negligible
to IIMs, engineers like Narayan murthy have

We need a better application of philosophy by our politicians and academicians.
A engineers will try without any backup to promote his enterprunal skills where as these guys from IIM are more worried about salary and brain drain to western countries

enterpreneur. It's 'Master of Business
Administration' and not 'Master in Business
Ownership'. If that was the case, why would
you need a specialized course for 'MBA in
entrepreneurship'. Enterpreneurship skills
are something one needs to inculcate on
his/her own. Any institute can just provide
you an environment to become an entrepreneur
but its way to difficult to teach

this year, it is IIM Calcutta. Actually,
IIM-C had got better placements than IIM-A
last year too. But the difference between
IIMC and IIMA (second last year) was quite

the IITs and IIMs have a very much wrong
image in the public due to the media which
just shows a peak value not the average. Even
from IITs also some students get the packages
like 20-30 lacs but they are only few in
numbers. The rest of the students get an
average package only and media just shows the
highest possible value and thats how the
parents and the other public get very high
expectations while later the reality hurt
them. So, its my request to media persons to
