Bangalore: If you are an IBM employee and want quit your job before the June 16th, think twice. IBM which will celebrate its hundred years on the 16th of June also has a good news for its India employees to make it a more a remarkable event. IBM has announced that will give away $1000 worth shares to its 1,28,000 staff in India.

All IBMers who performed consistently over the 2010 roadmap will receive a grant of $1,000 of IBM stock bonus which will translate into stock units each valued at around $159 on the NYSE. These shares will last till the end of the next roadmap, 2015. The IBM employees have also been offered with what is called the restrictive stock unit (RSU), an agreement under which the employees will be promised returns on the stocks awarded without actually owning them.

This news might sound great but IBM has laid out several criteria under which the employee will be awarded this incentive. Only those who are IBM employees as of December 31, 2010 are eligible for the incentive, which includes the full-timers and the part timers. Also, since these stock incentives will not vest until 2015, anybody quitting the company before June 16 of 2015 will lose the eligibility.

Sam Palmisano , chairman of IBM said that all employees across the globe will receive the perk except for the top executives . The company generated about $16.3 billion of free cash flow, up $1.2 billion in 2010 and the gross profit rose to for the seventh straight year. Earnings per share were $11.52, an increase of 15 percent, and the eighth consecutive year of double-digit EPS growth. The major contribution to the growth comes from India.

While the IT industry is still coming out of the recession shell, IBM's latest trend to retain its employees has set the bar high for the other IT biggies like Infosys and TCS. This move will force all other multinational and Indian tech firms to dole out incentives to retain the best performers.

5: Like any other organization, IBM too has its pros and cons. When a person joins the company he/she must ensure either the money is good or designation / band is good or the overall exposure and learning is good. This is fundamental that should drive your decision to join any company. Like any other organization, there are pockets of excellence and pockets of cess pools. It all depends where you land up. $1000 is nothing huge but then it is better than nothing at all and also it is symbolic gesture of employee recognition in general across the organization. Yes ... lack of coffee, tea etc. is really a shocker. With company of IBM stature, these facilities are well expected ... even much smaller organizations maintain these facilities. Having said that IBM is good at certain things ... like flexibility of working from home (this is really favourable for female employees). IBM is never known to be a great pay master and frankly there are so many institues churing out fresh engineers that they there is always steady supply of human resources available ... fresh or as replacement. If their policies irk some employees, business sense tells them to overlook that. Also, IBM knows, when an employee leaves the organization after a few years, his worth shoots up dramatically in the job market and he commands premium. So, they play this card well at the time of hiring. IBM is one of the greatest IT companies in the world and there is no denying (how many other IT companies can boast this!). And I am this love-it, hate-it relationship will continue but IBM would remain dominant in the industry for good time to come. Enjoy your stay till you can. Everyone has his own priority (money, job location, etc). When you feel the factor that pulled you in the organization has eroded, walk out of there. This is true for all organizations ... not only IBM. In the end these are just my thoughts ...

So in short you want to say that IBM is a good company for women and old aged people who don't wnat any more change any firther salary increament does not make any difference to them. Work with your own ease without any decipline of timing and work completion. You are writing all these because you need flexibility in work timing, but you should know that every body who looks for a job is for money first then all the Philosophy of position , work timing comes. Abount learning while working is available everywhere. In IBM opportunities are for the people whose people manger is happy with him / her or you can say with all means if he keeps his people manager happy it doesn't matters if the things are right or not.

Finally with pea nut increaments in last 5 years 1000$ is just a kind of bitter lolipop which IBM is offering just to save its face. Wheras I feel it is exactly a indirect abusement to all the sincere employees of IBM by showing that you deserve this much only whatever effort you have put in the organisation. After 5 years of poor increaments which is nowhere matching to market inflation and growth too it is just a foolish attempt to make fool to the inteligent IBMers.

Let's consider negativities as well as positivities of IBM without any prejudice. The kind of flexibility that IBM offers is something that not many other companies can boast of. In spite of its faults, IBM is one of the greatest organizations that continues to flourish even after 100 years ... this is no small feat! Sustaining the growth and survival of the giant of this size, could not have been possible without having effective processes, guidelines and other desciplinary practices in place. I disagree here that money factor is the only consideration for everyone. I know several of my friends who quit good jobs in Bangalore and other cities just to come back to NCR. Some left their jobs for hierarchical growth opportunities. I am sure others would have observed similar cases as well. Money is ofcourse important but there could be other factors that are equally or more important for an individual, that can only be scrutinzed and prioritized by the person himself. It is wrong to paint everyone with the same brush. Management is a complex subject. Anyone who is having 10+ years of experience cannot and must not automatically get qualified as manager otherwise there would increased incidents of management failure and general dissatisfaction thereof. It is imossible for any organization to keep all its employees happy. One cannot achieve 100 percent success here. But as long as majority of employees are content, the target is achived for the organization. Sycophancy is prevelant in the industry and IBM is no exception. Manager must act sensibly but if he is not, then it is responsibility of second line manager to correct him. The blunt truth is that the employees are investment (like any other) for an organization and as long as human resource is abundant and skillset is also available amply, such incidents of employee dis-satisfaction will continue (where they feel cheated). If there is a better opportunity available, then one must grab it else try his luck in the current organization. For this decision and associated outcome, he must not blame anyone but himself.

8: I have been an IBMer for 5+ years..In these 5 years I have changed BUs and have seen most parts of it. I completely agree that its a company for managers who get 6digit salary per month. They r happy with both position and salary. But the most important part is the majority of the crowd consist of non-managerial level people who are victimised by the management in terms of work,money,favouritism,politics..Very rarely honest and hard working people get recognisition.Again this holds good for other MNCs as well (nothing specific to any particular MNC). Salary hike part really SUCKS BIG TIME! Couple of positives are, lots of things are streamlined in IBM and it gives a very wide range of growth(in terms of roles NOT money).
Regarding HR: I personally feel they should do some more cost cutting by removing that Org Unit and distribute whatever the HR does among FLMs & SLMs! HRs are nothing but eye washer to the outside world (coz all in IBM knows how strong they r). HR is nothing but a puppet of the management! Sometimes I feel if at all they have any brains!
Nevertheless, we all can post comments over here and express our views which is never going to change the way the Big Blues operate!

ly the Company is least bothered about these things especially in India.
Posted by:XXX - 04 Feb, 2011
10: I have not seen any other company where HR is practically non-existent. You go to the HR and they show your people manager, who, in India are the one's showing loads of attitude and think they are the owners of the company. Within the company if you change project or even go to a better position, if you donot have good hold, you would not get anything but you leave IBM and then join, you may get better band and very good salary hike. This is so ideotic that people actually get out of IBM to go to the next band and better salary. There is loads of example how the so called Process of IBM is twisted according to the wishes of the managers and the employees suffer. Even while leaving the company, the managers, to hide their incompetence can just put 3 months notice period to stop the employee from leaving.

Guys, here in the UK and our counterparts in the US are in the same boat as you all. All I can say is to gain experience/skills (if at all possible with the kind of demoralised workplace you are all currently in!) and get out. Don't let the IBM crap dominate your mind and lose your focus in relation to your career. I am getting out soon. The market here is tough at the moment but I am positive. While I am waiting to move out I am focused on developing my skills through self learning. As organisations get large things start to deteriorate. I have worked in the finance industry prior to IBM. There too some of the well known companies are the worst places to work. With India growing I am sure you will find more opportunities coming your way from other companies. So remain positive, stay focused and get out as quickly as possible.

IBM is making fool of their employees. Stay with the company for 5 years and get 1000. What rubbish? What is the current salary you are getting? They should think on that. People are deciding to leave IBM right in 2011, so if they want to retain employees, they have to increase the monthly salary right from this year.

Telling that we have a lot of growth from India and giving nothing. I know person working with IBM in Band 5 are getting salary of 12k per month. And also in the same Band people are getting 25k to 30k. Is this justified?

32: This is a unsuccessful move by IBM. $1000 USD & a time period of 5 years.. lol.. One can make much more if one moves out in just a years time.. Its only the learning in IBM that is the differentiator to other Cos. IBM decision making Mgmt shud understand the problems of the employees who are here for more than 2 or 3+ years at least. Everything from water, clothing, housing, food, almost everything's price has shot up in the last 2 to 3 years in India & up on that the IBM tag/brand (good for nothing) sometimes adds to the spending. And IBM has paid from about Rs.120 to may be Rs.2000 as hike to its employees in the last 3 years.. OVERWHELMINGLY PATHETIC.

Y the hell one shud serve this place. It does not even pay about 1% of the pay that the org/BU earns from each employee even though IBM India in particular is a cash machine for IBM. I suggest, join with a as BIG package as possible, learn as mush as you can & kick off (not only IBM but any other org) or if you are rally serious about a venture, then kick off on your own.

IBM is a good place to learn Technology. But management (includes HRs)totally spoiled the flavour & fragrance of it by playing cheap politics. No recognition for Hard workers. If resource is senior in the project & friendly with MGR & leads then resource will not have any limitations in every aspects of career. So better think abt the career (Technically and in Package wise)and join IBM. Better I suggest not to join IBM as am telling this with my 8+ yrs of exp in IT industry.

Now, IBM is not good place to work as I m thinking by making this week polices surly IBM is very week at managerial level.

Since, I have been working in this company last one and half yr. I have frustrating experience.

1 The technology which I m working is not suites my experience.

2 Friends those join since beginning of their careers their salary pkgs are not as per market standers (like yr xp +2 LPA approx) tribally below market standers.

3 Some places management is not so capable to handle transition projects and they were tried to be steady state in very less time span. This may cause to defect in quality and stress at work place.

4 May in night hours and shift timings problem with tea and coffee which very necessary that also not there for practitioners. In day time for tea need to go out side, this may affect predictability time as well.

Thanks for this stupid incentives.

Dear IBM

You have changed...

Your are not that company, what I m dreaming about..

47: Sorry, am I missing something here? IBM is offering RSUs currently valued at USD 1,000, which will vest over 5 years and this is being seen as a huge move towards attracting and retaining talent? Yes, IBM's stock has almost doubled over the last 5 years, so (difficult to make such predictions), let's assume that it doubles again. So we are saying that after staying for 5 years (yes, that's the vesting period and employees quitting before that will forfeit the entire amount), employees stand to make USD 2,000, ie, INR 90,000 (that too if the dollar does not depreciate, which I think is quite unlikely). I think the author of this article (and the one wrote something similar in the Economic Times), needs to do some thinking... Can't we just see this logically as a nice gesture from a company celebrating a 100 years in existence without trying to link up everything to how critical the IT-BPO talent in India is!

If you have joined as experienced or if you are a manager then you dont have right to talk about a developer's frustration. In the forum dont tell cock and bull stories as you do everytime at the time of year end PBC ratings. And also dont tell that IBM is paying goot lot of salary for doing nothing. This company is not having ethics while doing business. They are paying an employee only because they are getting much higher amount from the client. IBM treats an employee only as a revenue generating machine.. Not as human being. Because of your (managers) immature decisions lots of projects are scraped and lots of developers have lost the job. And you Swarna... Dont think that you are the only talented person in IBM. Dont think that all the people who wrote their opinion in this forum are less talented than you. I will say IBM is the worst place for the right talent people. May be you comes under a category where you people use your talent to create a rapport with managers(as sdutta said). People who work in IBM for more than 3+ years are under paid when compared to a person who comes from other company with 2+ exp. Infact they get double the salary when compared with the IBMers who are serving from the time they joined as freshers. And also the people who have been hired from other companies wont have enough technical skills when compared to us. So try to bring the word TALENT while discussing something about IBM. Talent... what talent... It is not required to have much talent to work in IT. Only the one have a talent in making rapport with managers to be recognized as "right talent" specifically in IBM.

IBM is not good and not bad. You need to decide first you are good or bad. IF you are good choose good company, if you are bad you know...coming to IBM matter...the company which is providing hikes in %0, %3, %5 or %3, %5, %7 depending on your/IBM performance rating and also not even able to pay 20% your variable pay amount (where as other companies paying 90% to 130%) which is in your package, How can you expect such a nice company will give bonus of $1000?..
Don’t expect anything from IBM as long as you are staying in IBM.
Few people say’s “Don’t kill your self” nothing saying in IBM.

IBM is good for all levels depending on how you look at it. I agree you dont get coffee/tea where as other Companies provides you even snacks. But do you really know how much the money is being cut in thier own salary in such companies? I dont think announcement of USD1000 should matter so much! Anyways, people are not going to stay for 5 years whole heartedly with or without announcement.
