BANGALORE: IBM announced the launch of 12 new IBM Rational version 7 products, the new suite of software delivered through the IBM Software Development Platform. In India, the total Application Development Software and Quality Life Cycle Tools market was estimated to be $ 61 million in 2005 and IBM enjoyed a market share of 40 per cent. IDC’s India Packaged Software Market Program (Q1, 2006) showed IBM at number one position in India. According, to Nasscom-Mckinsey survey, India has 7,50,000 developers of which majority are in the demographics of 21 to 40 years. IBM Rational considers this a huge potential for their future innovations and development of tools, as most of the talented minds and skills set are available in India. The IBM Rational 7.0 Suite was developed by, working closely with the customers, studying their localized needs. In lieu of the new IBM Rational Software Development Platform offerings, IBM allows organizations to govern their software development as a business process through Globally Distributed Development. “Today the Indian software industry is challenged with the complexities of a globally distributed application development model. Application development organizations need tools with features that enable globalization and process distribution”, says Sunil Kinger, Country Manager, IBM India Rational Software, Software Group. IBM is positive about the success of the software based on the fact that the large and huge systems are in place but there is no common methodology to govern them. The vertical scalability is growing leaps and bounds but it lacks the flexibility to handle the system effectively. The Governance is required by companies to provide easy access to data regarding requirements and analysis, design and construction, software quantity, providing feedback and the most important, maintenance and testing of the products. “The enhanced tracing ability that IBM Rational provides is a great functionality, useful for Siemens’ medical group products. We would not be able to meet the FDA approval without this, making it impossible to launch our products in the market”, explained Rainer Ersch, principle engineer, Siemens AG Corporate Technology. For the company e-signatures and deployment tracking are an absolute must, which is made possible by the IBM Rational software offering. According to the IBM analysts, Globalizations leads to additional increase in transactional and monitoring costs of firms. The new IBM rational software has the potential to cut down the cost by a large margin in these two critical areas and even act as a partner to provide automated tools, to continually add capability.
