IBM initiates Virtual Computing labs in 3 Universities

Bangalore: Aiming at recognizing qualified hires and creating multi-institution clusters, an associated research community and set of projects, IBM plans to start Virtual Computing Labs (VCL) in three Indian universities. VCL will be set up in three major schools Amrita University, Uttar Pradesh Technical University, and University of Hyderabad equipped with high-end servers and storage by IBM that can link students and teachers. "We have selected these varsities in the south, north and central part of India so that it will help to create a pool of computing resources across India," said Amol B. Mahamuni, Program Director, IBM India University Relations. The Labs should be operational by early 2008. According to Mahamuni, IBM will invest $100,000 (Rs40 lakh) to provide the technology infrastructure. The company is planning to install a virtual computing grid across the three locations too.
