BANGALORE : In the intense laptop battle, IBM India has emerged ahead of its arch rival H-P. IT market research agency IDC’s full year data for ’03 has placed IBM at 31.1% market share in value terms over H-P’s 30.5%. Notebook revenue in FY03 was $182.6m. H-P however is ahead of IBM by 909 units. In FY03, H-P sold 24,645 units of laptops over IBM’s 23,736 units. Upsetting market prediction of 30% growth, the laptop segment in ’03 grew 72% over previous year. IDC reports sales of 83,724 units over 48,666 in FY02. MNC and home grown brands like Wipro and Zenith among others are betting heavily on the mobile market which this year too is expected to grow by 70% plus. Scoring over the combined force of H-P and Compaq is an upside for IBM India, the company’s VP, personal computing division, Alok Ohrie told ET. IBM’s laptops grew 103% in FY03 over ’02, ahead of the market which grew by 72%. Rival H-P’s year on year growth was 52% said Mr Ohrie quoting IDC data. IT hardware makers place considerable importance to bagging the leading vendor title and hence often fight bitter battles. Notebook users come under three broad categories: The power hungry user who go for systems that gives maximum speed and performance, the road warrior who want multiple additional gadgets like extra disk capacity and the mobile aspiring category or the first time user.
