Illinois: The Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) has marked the ninth anniversary of the 2002 Gujarat genocide today. IAMC is the largest advocacy organization of Indian Muslims in the U.S. with 10 chapters across the nation It was in 2002 when a pogrom was unleashed on the Muslims in the BJP-ruled Gujarat. The unexpected incident took place after a train carrying Hindu pilgrims caught fire during a confrontation between Hindu militants traveling in a train and the local Muslims from the town of Godhra, killing 59 passengers. According to various human rights groups, more than 2000 people were killed in that unfortunate incident, while hundreds of women were raped and more than 1,50,000 were displaced. The Supreme Court has appointed a special Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) Special Investigation Team (SIT). IAMC has urged the Government of India to immediately grant CBI's SIT powers to use its recent multiple indictments in arresting and prosecuting Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister of Gujarat who is charged as supervising India's bloodiest ever communal riot in 2002.
