Information technology (IT) has become an indispensable part of companies spanning industries as diverse as healthcare, retail, transportation, banking and finance. Not even governments can do without IT. For a company to be competitive, it is imperative to minimise costs, one of the tools for the same is to have enhanced and effective software solutions for various business processes. It is in this context that the role of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) has gained considerable importance. The pace of the implementation of IT solutions in an organisation is determined depending on the initiatives taken by the CIO. The Economic Times CIO Survey aims at increasing awareness about the varied trends prevalent in the IT world. This is the second CIO survey conducted by ET. The first survey was published in ’02. in association with Gartner. The present survey has found that purchasing hardware is an important agenda for Indian companies, with the expenses allocated towards the same accounting to 22% of the total. One of the major boardroom decisions taken in every organisation is its IT budget. Outsourced IT services continue to be a favourite amongst companies, taking away about 21% of the total budget. Telecom is just a small pie of the total. The requirement for software seems to be slightly less than that for hardware as the amount allocated for the software licenses is just 16%. Many of the companies are operating on leased land and hiring PCs for usage. Thus lease, rent and depreciation also form an appreciable chunk of the total expenses.
