BANGALORE: Chinese telecom major Huawei Technologies is expanding its largest overseas R&D center located here with a commitment to invest $100 million, but appears concerned over delay in its planned foray into the Indian telecom equipment market with New Delhi yet to give its approval. Huawei Technologies India Pvt Ltd (HTIPL), the company's R&D arm, plans to ramp up the number of software engineers here from the current 1,200 to 2,000 within three years, its Chief Operating Officer George Huang told media here on Tuesday. He said the company is committed to invest $100 million to scale up R&D operations in India, half of which would go towards building a one-million square feet software campus at Whitefield here, where it has bought a 20-acre plot. But, responding to questions, George admitted that the Indian government was not giving its go-ahead so far for its proposal seeking to establish a telecom manufacturing facility and a trading license has led to "some impacts to our plans" (in foraying into the fast-growing Indian telecom market). "Maybe not so quickly what we imagined before", he said on delay in getting the green signal. According to HTIPL officials, Huawei Telecommunications India submitted its proposal to the government, seeking permission to set up the manufacturing facility with an investment of $64 million in March last year and is awaiting its clearance.
