LONDON: A new Asian rich list includes celebrities such as Gurinder Chadha who made "Bend It Like Beckham" and scriptwriter Meera Syal - but not the Hinduja brothers. The Asian Rich List 2003 was published by the Asian Express newspaper. Sarwar Ahmed, who published the list, said the Hindujas seem to have moved their wealth to India - a claim the brothers have strongly denied. To protests against the exclusion from the Hinduja office, they were told they had been eliminated on the ground that their wealth was not in Britain. That comes as a further blow to the Hindujas' claim to be leading Indians in Britain. They have been politically shunned and now they are not seen as billionaires, or even millionaires. The list shows that the traditionally rich Indians have seen an upheaval, with those in the property business up and those in the food business down. The star inclusions this time were Gurinder Chadha and Meera Syal, each valued at four million pounds. Sarwar Ahmed said: "Five years ago to see an Asian television personality on the rich list was unthinkable. Now Asians are entering mainstream entertainment and making millions." Food entrepreneurs Meena Pathak and Perween Warsi saw a considerable decline in their fortunes. The two women have slipped to the 59th position. The list compiled by Philip Beresford, author who prepares the rich list annually for The Sunday Times, is topped by Lakshmi Mittal, valued at 1.31 billion pounds. The wealth of Mittal is estimated to have gone up by 410 million pounds since last year. His LNM firm is now the second-biggest steel company. The London-based Jatania brothers take second place - for producing the likes of hairspray. They have seen a gain of 22 million pounds, taking them to 570 million pounds, the list suggests. The combined wealth of the 300 millionaires was 8.9 billion pounds, 600 million pounds less than last year. The list showed that Asian millionaires are getting younger: 47 are under the age of 40. The youngest is Ameet Kotecha, 29, worth 5 million pounds from his family's beer business.
