Shimla: Firms that have made a beeline to set up units in Himachal Pradesh thanks to tax breaks could flee if infrastructure facilities were not put in place soon, industry leaders of the hill state have warned. "The poor infrastructure has broken down in the Baddi and Barotiwala industrial zones and is not able to cope up with the rapid expansion of industry due to the central excise package which came into effect in early 2003," said Sachit Jain, a leading industrialist and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) representative. He was speaking at a seminar, "Strategy for Sustainable Development of Himachal Pradesh", organised by CII here Monday. The state has garnered industrial investments worth 220 billion since the central government announced central excise relief to promote industrialisation here. While the excise package is set to expire only in early 2010, the CII feels steps must be taken immediately to ensure that industrial units do not leave the state once the incentives are over. "Proper roads, housing, schools, hospitals and entertainment facilities among others are virtually absent in the state's fastest growing industrial belt of Baddi and Barotiwala," said Jain. "Baddi is functioning as a satellite town of Chandigarh from where it takes some four hours to travel to and fro for industrialists and executives. "If the state government had provided the required infrastructure at Baddi itself, most of these people would not waste time in travel," he said.
