Bangalore: In the rate that the present mobile phone market is growing in India, it comes as little surprise to hear about the increase in mobile phone sales. However, the last quarter (April-June 2010) has witnessed record sales of mobile phones in India, touching an all time high. A total of 38.63 million handsets have been sold during the period. IDC, an advisory firm, reports that there is over 6.3 percent sales growth in this quarter as compared to the same time period in the previous year. Nokia and Samsung continue to be the market leaders with 36.3 percent and 8.2 percent market share respectively. The surprise finding here is that the third position is not held by some one big but by a Chinese manufacturer G'Five. It holds 7.3 percent of the market share. The top five spots are rounded off by Micromax Mobiles and Spice Mobiles at fourth and fifth places respectively. A new trend appears to have emerged that being the small players are grabbing big market share. Premier manufacturers like Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG seem to be thrown out of the race. The report added that there is a growing demand of multi SIM handsets by the Indian consumer. So much so that dual SIM handsets sales have soared from less than one percent in 2009 to over 38.5 percent in just one year. Since the small manufacturers are giving good deals at affordable prices, the Indian consumer is drawn toward them. Its only a matter of time then that we will see these new players reaching new heights in terms of mobile sales and end up as the top phone makers in the country.
