BHUBANESWAR: Ortel Communication Ltd, India's first Internet service provider license holder, Thursday offered high speed broadband Internet connection to Orissa at a cheaper rate. "We are offering 256 kbps high speed broadband Internet connection in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar at cheaper rates than we were charging earlier," Ortel vice president, B.P. Rath told IANS. "The high speed cable modem will cost only 1,750 against the 3,000 charged earlier. A customer will get the service at 40 percent reduced rates," he said. The company has penetrated a few thousand households in the twin cities through its state-of-the-art HFC (hybrid fibre coaxial) network built to provide convergence services. "While most of the service providers in India are still planning to provide a speed of 256 kbps to the end users, we have already made it a reality by providing bandwidth ranging between a minimum of 256 kbps for home users to as high as 1 Mbps for heavy commercial users," he said. "With the enhanced bandwidth, net surfing in Orissa now becomes 20-25 times faster than ever before," he said.
