CHANDIGARH: Haryana will generate an additional 100 billion units of power by February 2005 when the seventh and eighth units of 250 MW each at the Panipat thermal power plant are commissioned. Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala made the announcement Saturday at Faridabad. He said his government had enhanced Haryana's power generation capacity by 792 MW within three-and-a-half-years. "As a result of the effective steps being taken to generate power, Haryana will be able to generate so much power after a year that it will not only meet its own requirements but also be able to supply power to needy neighbouring states." He said work on setting up two units of 250 MW each was being taken up at Yamunanagar, 90 km from the state capital. Steps had also been taken to set up a 432 MW unit gas based power plant in Faridabad and similar gas-based power plants of 500 MW each at Hisar, 180 km from here, and Yamunanagar, Chautala said. "Power generation units will also be set up in all sugar mills to generate power from residue. A 360 MW power generation plant is also being set up at the oil refinery in Panipat," 130 km from here. Apart from enhancing generation capacity, the transmission and distribution systems were also being strengthened. As many as 39 new substations had been set up and 204 existing substations upgraded in the last three-and-a-half years, Chautala said.
