Haryana engineering students invent oxygen-run bike
In a bid to promote green energy, some engineering students of Palwal city in Haryana have designed a motorbike that can run on oxygen. The idea originated with the need of alternate fuel, which can reduce the dependency on non-renewable fuels such as petrol and diesel."This bike is set apart from the others because its engine suffers no blast, nor does the temperature rise. The air is compressed and sent to the engine. The piston reciprocates to the air pressure leading to an up-down movement, making the flywheel run, and therefore, making the bike start," said Pratham Pal, one of the inventors.Devised as part of a college project, the bike can travel for about 500-600 kilometres at 100 litres at 300 PSI (pound-per-square-inch) of oxygen at the speed of 10-20 kilometres per hour.

The students said they hope to receive financial assistance to innovate their prototype further that would help them to reach a much wider range of customers.Mayank Bhardawaj, another student in the 'eco-friendly inventor' group said the major challenge they faced was to change the basic mechanics of the current engine of the bike to make it run on compressed air."Our future plan is to seek facilities for research and development and financial help from government or private company and then innovate our prototype further to make it a practical and applicable model. We will begin from the scratch, and create an engine of our own which we couldn't do this time," said Bhardawaj.

Eco-friendly vehicles are gaining popularity in India with growing pollution, making it a potential endeavour for these students.

3: Great work guys...
but I am curious about the power for compression.
how do you make compression ?
using which power ?

4: Well I am the Engine development head of the team which developed this technology demonstration motorcycle, my name is Mayank Bhardwaj and i belong to Palwal city, Haryana.
First of all I would like to thank you all for your valuable comments, also the critics. While we started our work on our project we had all things in our mind about conservation of energy etc etc etc... Its all true, but we just wanted to demonstrate a technology.
secondly ours is a fresh idea (I am not saying that we are the first ones to do so) because we did not had any idea of such invention else where, also Mr. Guy Negre(MDI Person) of France produces rotary engines, while ours is Reciprocating engine.
Thirdly we developed a new device to make engine compatible with compressed air, and we have also applied a patent for the same (If I am not wrong, this is happening for the first time).
Also being engineering students this was our best, but yes the better than the best is about to come. We will be sincerely looking forward in this regard as soon as our exams get over. we have formed a company with the name PNMX Techworks (Search it on facebook) to continue research and development in this project.
Your Suggestions and Comments are most Welcome.

5: Compressing the air needs a huge amount of power from where you will be getting the power to compress the air even if you are having the compressor in the bike.

6: Guys, My heartfelt appreciation to the students. On another thought... Have you read the below, what I am going to paste. This is the reason that innovations like these does not come to see light and get commercialised. Have you thought what the Middle East and Oil producing countries would do if this innovation gets clicked? Ask these questions: Who supports all these Oil/ Gas producing countries?

-------

U.S. President Barack Obama wants America to stay ahead in the global race for clean energy innovation and wants his country to make sure that new technological breakthroughs do not take place in India and China.

In his address to the workers at an transmission plant in Indiana, Obama said there is a growing realisation across the world that clean energy technology is the way to the future. "We're in a competition all around the world, and other countries'Germany, China, South Korea'they know that clean energy tech is what is going to help spur job creation and economic growth for years to come," Obama said.

"This is why," he said, "we've got to we win that competition." Obama has time and again told Americans to tighten up in education and innovation to keep intact their lead over rapidly advancing countries like India and China. "I don't want the new breakthrough technologies taking place in China and India," the US President said. Rather, he said, he wants all those jobs generated in the US with US workers, American know-how and American ingenuity.

8: During engineering project doing something like this is great!

One of the foreigner while returning home, in Airport, some analyst ask What do you think about India?
He replied: India is a full of Doctor, I got cold/cough during my stay, and starting from Rickshaw puller, hotel boy, security, hotel owner, every one is advising me different way to cure.

12:
I agree fully on this.Man has been dreaming about perpetual motion since he started thinking about energy (archemedian wheel)This is made sure with the law of conservation of energy. This is not to discourage but we should also remember the story of Louis who ordered people to eat cakes when they did not have bread.

18: The only way India will develop and improve standard of living for Indians is to innovate specific to India and then make it perfect with quality Indias terrain weather conditions are very different to europe and usa
so only way out is innovate perfect it reinnovate it and keep doing it until perfection is achieved
Posted by:rama anne - 07 May, 2011
19: When India is going to support all these kind of innovative work ?
when India is going to fill the gap in the patent office ?
When India is going to concentrate more on R n D ?

20: While it is good that our engineering students are working on this kind of design, the concept is not original. a compressed air engine already exists, pioneered by a French engineer, Guy Negre, in 2000. Tata has bought up some of the designs. More info is available on , ,
,

and other sites.

21:
Sawmy
May be the french have done it ,it does not mean we should sit quiete at all
We should keep thinking and doing r and d until we perfect
Tatas have also bought Jaguar ,,and will probably access some technologies
What India needs is its own R and D and adoptation to its conditions
we cannot make India like Europe or USA (in terms of terrain weather conditions etc)
Indian terrain road conditions dictate own R and D

22: Actually most of indians like any items which came from developed countries, if a worst technology came from foreign country that will be appreciated, this situation like movie "Ek Doctor Ki Maut"

I would like to say that our government must appreciated these type of invention and give them platform to develop for commercial lavel. Actually we are Indians and "Hum Kisi se Kam Nahi" in Brains.

23: Good Discovery, as they certainly said they need to change the dynamics of the engine as it is suited for fossil fuels, not hydrogen or oxygen. Certainly this is a compressed air bike and not run on oxygen, for higher temperatures as in compressed air, i guess oxidation of metals takes place in the long run which calls for superior metals or inert ones with oxygen. I hope some private company finances such a research based project to take it further and helps those guys. Please do not go to government. Do you think our country would have been like this if government was really interested in the welfare of the people? They would have allotted funds for research in their budget if they were truly interested in research.

24: the mechanism behind it is jst a air compression.
then y to choose oxygen only for this one.
i think it is also possible with other gasses too...rt
Posted by:punith - 06 May, 2011
25:
yeah punith it should be pretty much able work on any gas bcuz it uses air compression......am thinking about helium... cuz it is a low density inert gas.. and also chak de India iz r8t ...oxygen iz easily available ...
praveen Replied to: punith - 07 May, 2011

Its becoz its easily/freely available.. no production cost.. other gasses will have to be produced separately you dumb a&*hole.....

Before insulting Mr.Punith like that, U Mr. Dumb Ass could have read the article better. U dont have to produce any particular gas for the kind of motor described here. Just suck in any of the gases or mixture of them present around u, compress it into the cylinder and it can power the engine.

dfntly they must b havin more things in their mind but unable to implement due to lack of financial, wen they have worked this much can go further js they need the support of finance for their innovative mind, thts y these type of stuffs are posted on media so tht ne fine day this will reach to rite person, unlike critisizers
