NEW DELHI: Electronic hardware exports from the country is estimated to have touched $2 billion during 2004-05, according to provisional estimates by the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC). D.K. Sareen, Executive Director, ESC, stated that, "highlights of the year's performance were the accelerated growth in exports of telecom equipment and consumer electronics. The growth rate for 2004-05 works out to 3.90 percent”. The electronic hardware segment consists of consumer electronics, telecom equipment and cables, instruments, electronic components and computer hardware. Of these, electronic components accounted the major share of exports from the country, at 47.5 percent. In absolute terms, export of electronic components has increased registering a marginal growth of 1.20 percent. "The lacklustre performance of the electronic components is being closely looked into to identify the reasons behind it. Our belief is that it could be a just a freak phenomenon. We expect that export of electronic components will pick up considerably in the current fiscal year," says Sareen. Comparing to the last year’s performance, the exports of consumer electronics have marked a 39.3 percent growth In absolute terms, exports have estimated to touch $275 million in 2004-05 from 180 million in 2003-04. Consumer electronics exports constitute roughly 14 percent of the total electronics hardware exports from the country.
