New Delhi: Chinese electronic goods major Haier Thursday announced the acquisition of a manufacturing plant for refrigerators, colour televisions and washing machines in Pune to boost its presence in the Indian market. "Haier's target is to become one of the prominent players in the Indian market in the coming few years. We wish to achieve this by following the localisation strategy, where research and development, manufacturing and marketing activities are carried out as per local way," said Shi Zhiyuan, managing director of Haier Appliances (India). The plant in Ranjangoan of Pune is spread over 40 acres of land and Haier is upgrading it with state-of-the-art equipment to create a research and development facility for refrigerators. "During our presence in the last three years, we had been able to localise product development and marketing. This acquisition is our next step in local manufacturing strategy," added Shi. Haier initially plans to manufacture its wide range of refrigerators at this facility in Pune. The plant is expected employ over 500 people including contract workers. "India is a key market for Haier's global operations and the launch of our manufacturing unit is a reiteration of Haier's long-term commitment to the Indian market," said Pranay Dhabhai, chief operating officer of Haier Appliances (India).
