Bangalore: Hewlett-Packard (HP) is going to ship a tablet-style computer, based on its WebOS operating system in the first half of the coming year. According to a company executive, HP is also contemplating on releasing a tablet that runs Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system, reports Paul McDougall of InformationWeek. Earlier this year, HP acquired WebOS through its $1.2 billion acquisition of mobile device manufacturer Palm. Although the move raised questions about HP's commitment to Microsoft, now it appears that HP will target the consumer market with WebOS-based mobile products, while continuing to offer Windows-powered devices to enterprises. With the release of the tablet, HP is hopeful of giving competition to Apple's success with the iPad. Apple sold more than three million iPads in the first 80 days the product was on the market. Adding to it, Dell has also made it appearance it the arena with the Google Android-based Streak. HP reported profits of $1.8 billion for its third quarter, compared to profits of $1.7 billion in the same period a year ago. The company's revenue grew 11 percent year-over-year, to $30.7 billion. According to HP's acting CEO Cathie Lesjak, the company's third-quarter performance demonstrates the power of its strategy and the discipline of its execution. Earlier this month, HP's former CEO Mark Hurd resigned after disclosing an inappropriate relationship with a marketing contractor that worked for the company.
