HCL Technologies, one of India's leading software development and services majors, Monday announced its bagging a $160 million outsourcing contract from BT (British Telecom) Group.

NEW DELHI: As part of the agreement, HCL Technologies will set up an exclusive contact centre for BT in Noida, on the outskirts of New Delhi. Senior officials of BT, one of the world's leading providers of telecom services, will manage the centre. The centre will handle part of BT's business telemarketing, billing and conferencing work, said Sujit Baksi, chief executive officer of HCL Technologies' business process outsourcing (BPO) units. "Currently, ours is the only company in the country that offers a three-way communications resilience between India, Britain and the U.S. through our centres located in the three countries," Baksi told a press conference here. "This, coupled with our range of service offerings, proven calibre and emphasis on investments to develop international standards and facilities, has won us this order from BT." Pierre Danon, chief executive officer of BT, said: "The contract to provide us with services in India was put out to competitive tender. "Prospective partners were assessed against a detailed set of criteria and it was agreed that HCL Technologies was well suited to our requirements". HCL Technologies plan to hire around 1,000 professionals by end of the current year for BT's contact centre. "The diverse nature of assignments will entail a broad profile of professionals including service executives, high-end data analytics experts and software engineers," said a company statement. India's vast pool of English-speaking and cheaper manpower and training programmes have helped transform the country into a global technology outsourcing giant in the last few years. These jobs are mainly coming to India, as it is much cheaper to process activities such as human resources, finance and accounting and customer care here.
