New Delhi: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) would be issuing a set of guidelines for scrutinising the applications for licences from companies that want to enter the telecom business, Communications and IT Minister A. Raja said. "The DoT is looking at formulating guidelines for screening new applications. I have also directed that the applications should be selective," Raja told reporters on the sidelines of an award ceremony here Monday. Recently, a couple of real estate majors such as Parsvnath Developers and Unitech Ltd. have applied for licences for providing telecom services in 22 circles across the country. According to the DoT, there are about 185-190 new proposals from various companies that are seeking to obtain the universal access service licences. The recent flurry for licences has gained momentum after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) came out with a recommendation that there should be no limit to the number of service operators in a particular network area, officials said.
