New Delhi: The government has asked the mobile operators to enhance their call-tapping capabilities so that 1 percent of their subscribers can be simultaneously tapped, essentially about 7 million mobile subscribers across India. At present every operator is required to have the capability to tap 220-240 mobile phones in a service area. Many industrialists including Ratan Tata, and banker Deepak Parekh have expressed their concerns over the phone tapping issue. Ratan Tata, for whose firm Niira Radia was working, has also approached the Supreme Court over the phone tapping issue. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, while acknowledging industry concerns over the issue, however defended the government’s action saying that these powers were necessary to deal with issues like tax evasion. It is also noted that the government is also aiming to tap phones of 5 percent of subscribers of each telecos simultaneously.
