Government reconstitutes direct taxes advisory panel

New Delhi: The government has reconstituted the Central Direct Taxes Advisory Committee for 2008-2010. The main function of the committee is to advise the government on measures for developing and encouraging mutual understanding and cooperation between tax payers and the Income Tax Department, and remove administrative and procedural difficulties. "The minister of finance will be the chairman and the minister of state (revenue) will be the vice-chairman of the committee. The committee will have three official members and 16 non-official members," the finance ministry said in a statement. The official members will be the revenue secretary and the chairman and a member (revenue) of the Central Board of Direct Taxes. The non-official members include four members of parliament (two from the Rajya Sabha and two from the Lok Sabha) and 12 representatives of advocates, chartered accountants, economists and management experts, and trade, commerce and industry from four zones of India. The term of office of non-official members will be two years. The committee will meet twice every year - between October and December, and between April and June.
