Government launches energy saving scheme

New Delhi: The government Wednesday launched Bachat Lamp Yojna, an energy scheme aimed at saving 10,000 MW of power in the next three years.
Under the scheme, the government would distribute less power consuming compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) at a price of 
15 to replace existing bulbs.
"Just to add energy is not enough, saving energy also has to be high on agenda. As I have added, we will not only achieve the target of 90,000 MW by the end of the 11th plan period, but will also save around 10,000 MW," Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde told reporters here.
As a part of the initiative, the government will replace about 400 million bulbs with CFLs. In the first phase, it will provide 600,000 CFLs to Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and 500,000 CFLs to Yamunanagar in Haryana.
"Lighting accounts for 20 percent of the energy consumption. It's possible to enhance energy efficiency by 25 percent if we employ energy efficient measures in office buildings and households," Shinde said.
"The energy efficient technology itself provides investment opportunity of 56 billion (5,600 crore) and will save around 1.7 billion unit of electricity annually," he added.
The government on this occasion has given five-star rating to the Reserve Bank of India's Bhubaneswar building and four-star rating to the RBI building in New Delhi for applying energy-efficient measures.
