Google's branded Gphone on its way?
Bangalore: After offering Android to several smartphone makers around the globe, Google is trying to use the operating system (OS) in its own branded smartphone. According to TheStreet.com, Google might be working with a mobile phone maker to launch their own branded Android smartphone later this year. This rumored Google branded smartphone is expected to further boost the popularity of the Android mobile OS. The report further said that this smartphone is likely to be sold through retailers without any contract. Customers would be able to purchase it and use it with any service provider of their choice. These developments come just days after Verizon announced its own Android offering - Droid phone. The Verizon Droid, made by Motorola and set to be launched in November, is the latest in a string of Android devices on the way from the U.S. carriers. A Google-specific phone, however would be drastically different due to its unlocked nature. Most popular American smartphones are tied to singular carriers and require lengthy service contracts for optimal pricing. Sprint's upcoming Samsung Moment, for example, costs $479.99.
