Google to provide speech, multimedia content search

BANGALORE: Google is working on speech and multimedia content search in a bid to maintain its supremacy as the largest Internet search engine with universal access. Google's co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin told reporters here Wednesday at the company's new research and development centre that text search would, however, continue to dominate Internet for a long time to come. "We are working on speech, image, graphics and multimedia content search though we believe text will remain dominant for many years as a key medium," said Page, who is president, products. "There is a huge demand for text-based search as it continues to be a strong medium of communication. Google appreciates its dominance as it enables anyone to read and write easily." Formally inaugurating Google's India operations, Page and Brin said the Bangalore centre would mirror its main research centre in California and would roll out new products and services for its global users as well as customers. "We have about a dozen people here, including a couple of our Indian employees relocated from our US operations. Krishna Bharat, architect of Google News, and Lalitesh Katragadda, chief software engineer, are back in India to head the operations here, said Brin, who is president, technology. "Search is good business and has become competitive. Our technology is ahead of our rival search engines," he claimed. On the launch of Google mail service (Gmail) offering 1 GB space, Page said it was presently being offered on invitation and would be made available to more users once additional features were added in the near future. "We are working on new features and assessing the response to overcome the initial glitches so that we can scale its functions for greater access.
