Google launches a major offensive against Microsoft

Bangalore: The clash between Microsoft and Google has turned more intense. First, Google announced its first operating system, Chrome. Then Microsoft announced the new version of Office with major cloud applications support. To increase its presence in the search engine market, Microsoft recently announced its deal to take over Yahoo's search business. Now, Google has announced the launch of its new promotional campaign called 'Going Google.'

The main target of 'Going Google' campaign is to topple Microsoft's hold in office applications. Google will soon launch a series of advertisements which will boast why some 3,000 organizations are signing up to use Google applications each day. Google claims that so far over 1.75 million businesses, schools and organizations have signed up to use the various combinations of Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs and the other Google apps. Currently, Microsoft Office has the highest market share for office related applications. Google is trying to be proactive in telling people why its solution is better than Microsoft Office.
Google will be heavily investing in the 'Going Google' campaign and it plans to advertise through billboards on four major U.S. highways that will give a new message about Google apps everyday for a month. The billboards will be placed on the 101 in San Francisco, the West Side Highway in New York, the Ike in Chicago, and Mass Pike in Boston.
Google is also attempting to use Twitter platform to spread the 'Going Google' message. At the bottom of its blog post on the matter, Google urges people who use its apps to 'Tweet your story' and provides a link to auto-populate a tweet with the #gonegoogle hashtag. You can also follow the GoogleAtWork Twitter account to follow the Gone Google stories.
Google also plans to use 'Spread the Word' campaign, which will be similar to Mozilla's campaign to promote Firefox. Google will also try to use the conventional way of sending fliers and pre-populated emails to promote its 'Going Google' campaign.

1: My best wishes are with google as I don't
like Microsoft much. But if google wishes to
capture a respectable market share, then it
must make the products user friendly. But I
do doubt like many of my peers here that will
we be feeling secure after putting our
precious data in remote servers. Besides in
India specifically, there are many PC owners
who don't have a net connection and so
anything web based will be irrelevant for
them. Hope google comes out with a solution
for working offline too.

2: I do not understand the competition in office
product of google and microsoft. I use both
of them regularly and I find them
complementary to each other. I use MSoffice
for their ease of use and whenever i have to
collaborate with someone or quick edit in
mail..I use google products.

tagged for free stuff and loose your personal
control by getting dependent on free service
provider. For personal choice of freedom you
need to pay.

They just bluf to keep the stock price up.
They are scared now. Google just copied
everything from Yahoo and nothing new. This

MS has mostly kept all software on licence
& this should continue .If open source is
avail every then there will no job for people
cause all will be using free softwares wich
are dowloaded & guided how to use frm the
intrenet so no need of any engineer ..

quality, new products and low price. But the
two giants are forgetting the IBM. Some day
they will come with something very surprise,
currently they are providing everything

Microsoft, false promises like Hindi version
of Word and OS and incompatibility issue in
his own softwares like Office 2003 and Vista.
It is the compulsion which forces people to
choose Office. If google keeps interface
simple not complex and there are great help
files covering minute details, there is no
way Google can be stopped.

23: I feel Google would be a competition to Linux
rather than Microsoft.. Becoz...
1. Microsoft is in into business since v long & captured almost 75% of the market share.
2. Google would be the competition to only Open source. Coz MS has licence for it.
3. All the opensource users are hardly 15 to 20% companies of the total market. So those only can go for google OS, & google can replace them.
4. There are lot many chances of Harwares not supporting Google OS, Where all the OEMs of hardwares support Micosoft or vice versa...

its search engine now is a far big thing
cause the company which became popular with
the search engine introduced 'gmail' othr
community services like 'orkut' the free
support of imap and pop mail by gmail and
seriously some good online applications like
google docs , google calender and a long list
to go seriously microsoft has to think of
something cause google is on the way

28: Is this a real rivalry or a new business
tactic?
Even if the rivalry is for real, and concerned with the search engine thing or operating system thing, it's good to have 2 giants in the market to avoid our huge dependency on one of them. We get to choose what we want.

29: What is misleading heading. Google has
launched a campaign to benefit itself, its
not directly against Microsoft perse.
And for those of whom to which their personal traits do not matter will be content by saying "google helps the common man for free". When is the last time you did a bit of googling on that?
I am not biased towards MS or Google, neither of them are angles, they are business empires and do what is necessary for them to stay competitive.

30: Google is not really known to make serious
products, except the one solid product that
they have -- search. They should stick to
what they do best and leave OS & Office
Apps to the specialists.
MS's strategy of entering the search market through Yahoo tie-up makes sense and is more logical since Yahoo specializes in web search.
Most of Google's products are painfully slow, like gmail -- ran in beta phase for years and years and still hangs the browser, the web admin panel of their adwords platform on which they make a living can frustrate the hell out of anyone and the veracity of the so called 'organic search results' needs to be verified.

31:Kailash,
If that's the issue you are facing then try gmail on firefox or Opera browser or just try any other browser than IE. IE6 was bad and IE7 (which my company recently installed on all machines) is even worse.
I run firefox on UBUNTU 9.4 on my personal laptop and never faced a single issue with gmail or any mail, website etc.
Accept it man, IE IS BAD!
Now coming to specialization. Do you really need a specialized company for writing an OS. AFAIK, Unix was written by two people working at AT&T Bell Labs. Linux Kernel was written by a single person. Minix was written by a single person, even DOS was written by a single person. Surely it doesnot even need a company support. It can be developed by an enthusiast even at his/her home. Mazor Unix developments took place in Universities.

google becoz it gave them more than 1G space
and freedom to choose their log names. But it
hangs the browser(older versions). open
Office apps are not as good and comparable to
ms office but again they are free.It is good
for users but I think Microsft has also taken
lot of intiatives for free softwares and
knowledge sharing.MS products are easy to
user.
We should not only blame microsft all other properitary software vendors are same be it oracle, BMC, HP. So it is always good if open source makes sth better or in comparison to proprietary products.

33: But I disagree with you Rajender. I chose
gmail because it was a Google product. My
primary email before Google was on Yhaoo
which I created way back in 1996. I used
gmail and found it fantastic. Its new
features, clever use of AJAX to give the fast
interface and freedom from ads etc were just
too motivating to move towards it.
Coming to OpenOffice, which version are you talking about. Have you used version 3.0? Use it first and then tell us you experience here.
Please also share what initiative has been taken for free softwares and Knowledge sharing. I bet people will be glad to know.
Coming to Oracle....gone are those days when Oracle used to be proprietary, now its free and open-source for users other than enterprises. Oracle itself is a big promoter of open source. BMC also have started some movement towards open source with some of its products. HP has rolled out open source Linux and openVMS....
Do some research before posting here budy.

Windows on my Home PC and laptop a long time
ago in year 2001. I firmy believe that I have
been a satisfied user of Linux all these
years. all of them, be it RedHat's or
Mandriva, Ubuntu, Gentoo or SUSE, were better
than MS Windows.
In earlier days of its development Linux needed a bit of tweeking to make everything working. but nowdays its fun. even installing has become easier. If you don't want to be a command line user, its just as user friendly as Windows, and far better in many aspects like resource utilization, security, virus protection, community support. It gives you the freedom to run softwares of your choice. Now days almost all softwares available for Windows are available for Linux too or an alternative is there.
Microsoft can be best, but for that it needs to go open source.

60: Its very SAD to see indian companies have
lost the dotcom race. Its like Pepsi &
Coke sparring and no 3rd company can
participate in this war. We created history
in dotcom like Baazee.com, Indya.com,
Hotmail, etc... who could have become the
Google & MS of today. Unfortunately the
short vision of these dotcom owners to sell
them has put us out of this. weak and Lack
of IPR laws, patenting, royalties, etc in our
system is also a major reason. WE INDIANS IN
THE IT ARENA HAVE BECOME A SERVICE CENTRES
FOR THESE GOBAL COMPANIES. Its time we come
out of enjoying this WA as a spectator and
create more Sabir Bhatias, Pradeep Kars, and
the likes... Or rather these guys wake up and
do something new and great.

def shud appreciate this of course...i
respect ur concern for the country..I
personally enjoy this as a spectator even
though a huge fan of mah country. bro we are
doing good in other areas well..And yess we
do have a good position in dotcom race
too..and if you have some good plan or
roadmap which you can propose , go ahead or
join the league of people who are just saying
for the sake of saying only ! bt why be
jealous of others and pinch it on us rather
than taking some good learnings out of them

Please get your facts straight. Google is
planning to launch an OS that is browser
centric. It would take decades for Google to
give a REAL OS...

64: Why do you think that It would take decades
for Google to roll out an OS. Your statement
is funny man! Google doesnot even need to
write a kernel by itself. There are just too
many experimental kernels available to start
with. Think of Solaris, HP-UX, AIX,
IRIX...all of these are based on unix kernel.
SUN or HP or IBM have just picked the kernel
and developed their own routines, shells,
sevices etc to bundle their fully featured
operating systems. Do you think win32.dll,
the windows kernel is some innovative and
bright idea from Microsoft itself? If you
think so then please surf some history about
it. Google can help you in this.
Even most of the filesystems, memory management algos, sheduling algos etc were developed in some labs or Universities or by independent enthusiasts.

Google and Microsoft.Thing is that Microsoft
never gives any thing free so it's not giving
much benefit to normal end user as opposed to
Google.Google gives free many of their

has established their company before
Microsoft? I guess we would never heard the

plan to go beyond the MS office system of
Microsoft. Its welcoming one and at the same
time its a challenging approach for google.
The entire businesses in the world are
adopting MS office, and how it could be
overcome by google is the real challenge. But
though Microsoft has doing Bing search engine
its not as good as google. Reg. the engine
catagories google is the best all among
them.

87: Approach made by Google to counter Microsoft
is not so much effective, instead of going
through Billboard only in America, Google
should try the same in other developing
countries viz India. There are so many
offices, Institutions are there apart from
that, India is having large IT population,
this will help google to have WOMA, which is
considered as the most effective and
effeicent way of advertising. So, wake up
google, Let's get going google..

benefited the common man a lot , for free. As
far as Going Google is concerned, I feel it
should have been extended to All Major IT
Destinations Around the world (City Wide) as
opposed to Country wide Approach and should
not have been limited to US only. Secondly as
far as Google Docs and Apps are concerned - I
share the view of Siv M to the extent that no
one would like have their corporate /
confidential / personal data over some remote
server BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN MICROSOFT IS
THE WORLD! Let's not Forget OpenOffice -
which is fast becoming a popular replacement
for MS-Office !

104: Even if Google creates an OS, finally in a
company Active Directory is the key thing and
hence if employees uses Windows they
definitely have a great advantages due to AD
integration with Windows which google cannot
as AD is a microsoft product and they
restrict this. Now if google decides to
comeup with something new to replace AD, no
one will take that risk as it is really
hectic and affect the company's business
drastically as migrations results in hours of
outages and more over MS support is always
better than google

107: I'm not sure if guys AGAINST Google are aware
of its philosophy: DO NO EVIL. Whatever
Google does, it ensures it is aligned to this
philosophy! As such, Google wont abuse the
private info., alter T&C to make it a
paid service AFTER users shift over to Google
prods, etc. Moreover Google economy and
business model is based almost entirely on
search and advertising. Hence, it really has
no need to use subversive tactics to increase
its revenues. Alternately it has invested in
a lot of long-term projects which are aimed
for benefit of mankind with its surplus
resources. Thus, I am of the opinion that IFF
Google comes out with an Office suite or OS
coupled with hardware for free, it CAN BE
TRUSTED :-)
