Bangalore: In an effort to catch up to Apple in mobile applications market which is expected to triple this year to $15.1 billion, Google is actively searching for software engineers, user-interface experts, product managers and others with ideas for mobile apps.
As the tech predictions suggest, mobile app industry is going to be one of high tech's hottest sectors, and Google has reportedly designed a new strategy that will help the search engine to counter Apple who leads the mobile apps market, The Wall Street Journal reports.
According to a new study by research firm Gartner, mobile applications downloaded from online stores will be a $58 billion worldwide business by 2014, which predicted a 17.7 billion application downloads this year. The mobile application revenue is created both from paid downloads and advertising revenue generated by free apps.
What Google is looking for is not just the revenue part, but the fact that better apps will help its Android devices to gain ground on Apple's iPhones and iPads. Some of Google's new apps may be available only for Android-powered devices which is seen as an attempt to increase the demand for its operating systems and devices. This will also ensure that Google's search engine and other services are prominent on mobile devices.
Apple enjoys the lead in the market with more than 350,000 apps offered to users in its app store where as Google lags behind with only around 100,000 applications available for download in its online market.
It should be noted that Google has created just around 20 mobile apps in house so far. Some of its apps were started by employees in their spare time. Quoting people familiar with the matter, the journal indicated that the new developments will be scattered across Google's offices world-wide and the company will engage small groups of engineers to create a range of apps from games to services based on users' location.
Today a successful smartphone is not measured by the features it offers, but by the number of apps available in its app store. Google, thus, hopes to bring more users to its platform by powering the Android devices with more apps.
