PATNA: He hails from an area notorious for its gangsters, but that hasn't stopped a Bihar boy from topping the National Defence Academy (NDA) exam or from aspiring to be another Kalpana Chawla.
Abhishek Gupta said he wanted to be a space scientist to fulfil Chawla's unfinished mission. Scientist-president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is also his inspiration.
A resident of Mithapur, a middle class area in Patna known for its gangsters, Abhishek told IANS that topping the NDA exam was not his only aim. He wanted to top in the IIT exam as well.
"I also want to become a scientist like President Kalam to serve India," he said.
Chawla, 41, the first Indian-born woman to fly in space, was one of the seven astronauts killed on space shuttle Columbia last year.
Abhishek's proud parents are very upbeat over his success and say he has proved again that Bihar is not behind anyone as far as talent is concern.
They said it was his first success, and his target was far away. "We are confident that one day Abhishek will make Bihar and India proud by achieving some breakthrough in science," said Veena Gupta, Abhishek's mother.
His father R.K. Gupta, an assistant professor here, said: "There is no shortage of talent and genius in Bihar, unlike the image outside."
Abhishek said the credit for his success went to his parents.
