Gen Y believes in making fast bucks: Now it's proven
New Delhi: Drawing the attention of Generation Y to the work place and retaining their interest and talent will collaborate in optimizing the success of the organization. For the Gen Y it is always 'me first' and they want success and money to come fast to them, says a new study. The "Generation Y in the Workplace" study, a cross-market study conducted in India, China, and the U.S. was launched by Steelcase WorkSpace Futures - the global research arm of Steelcase. India and China represent nearly one third of the world's population and are key growth drivers for the global economy. With 644 million people, aged 30 or younger in these two markets, leading and shaping how the world and the workplace evolves over the next 20 years. The study, focused on office environment in relation to young professionals, has found that the typical Indian Gen Y professional is optimistic about new possibilities and the future, has a drive for entrepreneurship and making a difference, and carries a keen sense of competition at both regional and global levels. Steelcase identified this change and hence initiated the study of Generation Y. "With the increasing influence of the Gen Y knowledge workers at work, we are assured the importance of understanding the major trends happening in the workplace. The key implications of our research provide good insights to the Indian company management enabling them to better plan and design the future workplace for this next generation workforce," said Uli Gwinner, President, Steelcase Asia Pacific. "We believe when the workplace better supports workers, business results improve, and so do worker attraction, engagement, satisfaction and retention," he added. For the Gen Y workforce, work is essential but the focus is on shortening the process, and it is now no more "family first" but "me first" in personal life, as in "my work, my friends, my things, and my world," the study has found. When it comes to achieving results, the Gen Y professionals also believe in peer-to-peer interaction, quick collaboration and learning from others to get the work done and achieve growth. MNC interiors are safe havens for them, offering a new identity to employees and providing refuge from the chaotic and polluted outside environment. "The key implications of our research provide good insights to the Indian company management enabling them to better plan and design the future workplace for this next generation workforce," said Gwinner.
