New Delhi: Another milestone has been achieved in the Indian Medicine wherein two genuine and hospitable ideas have won the prestigious Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant for being novel ideas to improve global health. Prof Sujoy Guha of the Indian Institute Of Technology and Abi Santhosh Aprem of HLL Lifecare have provided a different look to Biological Sciences with their innovative contributions. They will each receive $100,000 in grant to help further their research work. A novel drug has been discovered by Prof. Guha which is a magnetic polymer capable of destroying or incapacitating both sperm and ovum passing through it. The drug has been termed novel because the procedure is non- surgical and reversible. Thus, it enables the woman to conceive by removing the drug from the fallopian tube in order to restore the woman's fertility. Prof Guha calls his drug FerroCept and adds that it is safe and can be removed when the woman wants to conceive. What if the drug cannot protect against pregnancy after sometime? Prof Guha defended his discovery by stating that the FerroCept can be inserted into the Cervix through a rubber tube and then positioned in the fallopian tube using an external magnetic field, changing to a semi- solid form from a liquid form with an external application of radio frequency. Throughout the reproductive period of a woman, the drug stays inside the FT. While throwing light on Aprem's discovery of the development of a biodegradable polymer to coat Copper T Intrauterine devices (IUD), his attempts to eliminate the side effects are clearly visible. This highly effective contraceptive device can be accepted on a large scale if the bulk shedding of copper irons can be prevented by the polymers that cause bleeding, cramping and pain. IUD is a long term birth control method and has risks when inserted into the Uterus. As per Martinez F, for most of the women, IUD'S are a safe option. But it does not suit everybody. But according to David Hubacher, the use of Copper IUD is not associated with an increased risk of tubule occlusion among null gravid women. Indian Science is advancing day by day but the most common complain of the common people is that the higher authorities have money for foreign businesses but not for health and sanitation. The country just sleeps at the end of the day in the hope of getting yet another remarkable leader so as to make the world a better place to live.
