Gadgets which have become Obsolete
Before there were computers, typewriters ruled the office space. In 1867, Christopher Latham Sholes, Carlos Glidden and Samuel W. Soule, invented the first successful commercial typewriter, although Sholes soon disowned the machine and refused to use it. By about 1910, typewriters reached a somewhat standardized design. Wellington Parker Kidder developed the 'Noiseless' typewriter, which was marketed in 1917, but it failed, as people preferred the 'clickety-clack' of typical typewriters. The Sholes & Glidden typewriters had established the 'QWERTY' layout for the letter keys, which is still very much in use, even in the modern mobile phones. Becoming a 'typist' was one of the few "respectable" jobs available for unmarried women. The last manufacturer of typewriters-in the world-Godrej and Boyce shut down its plant in Mumbai, India in April 2011.
