New Delhi: The rural Indians are also gadget savvy as the city residents, a research study conducted by global market research firm Gfk Nielsen revealed. Rural Indians beat the urban in the use of multiple sim handsets in 40 percent whereas only 20 percent of it is sold in metros. Seven percent of the mobile phones in the rural areas are touch screen and half of the mobiles of different ranges contain various features like social network applications, camera facility, with audio and internet facility. Anant Jain, GfK Nielsen India's Account Director for telecom and IT said that Mobile phones of sub 2, 000 price segment contribute 24 percent of urban India sales value whereas in rural India, share of this price segment doubles". 30 percent of the mobile phones are sold in rural areas in November. It’s a high growth opportunity for the telecom marketers in rural areas. Rural Indians crave for high tech feature phones or touch screen smart phones. Four percent of the revenue comes from the smart phones used in rural areas. Quite a contrast from the regular belief that urban is more tech savvy than rural, but this study definitely opens up a huge market for the smartphone makers, as it can definitely lead to strategy shifts to grab a part of this huge pie.
