GSM subscribers base swells to 50M

NEW DELHI: With the addition of two million new users in September, the GSM subscriberÂ’s base in India has risen to 50 million. According to the statistics released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the Global System for Mobile (GSM) base grew by 4.01 percent in September to reach the milestone. It however said the growth in subscriber base might lead to more congestion due to inadequate spectrum and points of interconnection. IndiaÂ’s largest private mobile operator Bharti Tele-Ventures Ltd added 650,000 new mobile users during the month, taking its total wireless user base to 14.067 million with a market share of 27.65 percent while the State-owned BSNL added 409,000 users, taking its total base to 11.90 million and a market share of 23.39 percent. Hutch came third by adding 401,000 new users, taking the market share to 19.08 percent with the total subscriber base at 9.29 million. The growth came from Circle C states that witnessed the highest rate of growth at 8.1 percent. Within the Category C circles, Bihar recorded the highest additions with 120,000 new users, followed by Jammu and Kashmir with 56,557 additions.
