GSM operators pull back plea, criticize Trai recommendations
New Delhi: Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar and Idea Cellular have pulled back petition before the Telecom Disputes Settlement & Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT), challenging Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (Trai's) recommendations on 2G spectrum. It includes a one-time fee for holding radio waves beyond 6.2 MHz. Including pricing of spectrum and the amount of contracted spectrum, two fresh applications have been made on pending issues by the three GSM operators today before TDSAT. The decision to withdraw the petition was made when TDSAT was about to reserve its order on the maintainability of the petition. According to GSM operators' counsel C A Sundaram, the petition was withdrawn with liberty to file alternative proceedings before the appropriate authority. On the other hand, Trai counsel Meet Malhotra told the regulator's recommendations to be advisory in nature. The three GSM operators have asked the government to reject the report, criticizing Trai's recommendations.
