NEW DELHI: General Motors India Tuesday launched its new look Chevrolet Optra here with additional features in styling, luxury and safety. The 1.6 litre base model of the mid-sized car has been fixed at 747,516. Four other variants carry a tag of 810,460 for 1.6 litre LS, 877,548 for 1.8 litre LS, 1,022,252 for the 1.8 litre LT and 1,084,188 for the 1.8 litre automatic transmission model. All prices are ex-showroom in Delhi. "By making India among the first countries in the world to build and sell the Chevrolet Optra, General Motors has demonstrated its faith in this market," said Aditya Vij, president and managing director of the auto giant's Indian arm. "Driving forward, GM will continue to roll out new models to meet the changing tastes and needs of local consumers as part of our pledge to become a leader and a trusted friend of the people of India." Optra was first launched in India in July last year, followed by an automatic transmission model in October 2003, and a 1.6 litre engine two months later. In August, 150 fully loaded designer editions were introduced with DVD systems. General Motors says some 13,000 Optra cars have been sold since July 2003. The 2005 edition of Optra has been given an exterior and interior facelift across all models and variants. These include an American Chevrolet grill, a 12 spoke, 15-inch alloy wheel, beige interiors and wood finish central console. The new safety measures include dual front air bags and anti-lock brake system with electronic force distribution, which prevents the wheels from locking during hard breaking and help the driver maintain control, GM officials said. Other models from the GM stable offered in India include Chevrolet Tavera, Opel Corsa, Opel Corsa Sail and Opel Swing, which are manufactured in Halol, Gujarat. In addition, GM also sells the imported Opel Vectra and Chevrolet Forester.
