NEW DELHI: General Motors India, a wholly owned local arm of the global automobile giant, Wednesday said its sales grew by a whopping 95 percent in the first five months of the current calendar year over the same period a year ago. The company sold a total of 8,319 cars between January and May in the current year as against 4,268 units sold in the same period in 2003, said a GM India statement. In May, GM India's sales grew by nearly nine percent over the 1,401 cars sold in the previous month, it said, noting the growth was led by Chevrolet and Opel sedan brands. "The continuing growth in sales of GM in India is primarily due to the tremendous response to Chevrolet Optra and Opel Corsa models," said P. Balendran, vice president (corporate affairs) of GM India. "Spurred by this success, we have just launched Chevrolet Tavera, a new-generation premium multi-utility vehicle offering a new choice in this fast-growing segment," he said. "Some more new and exciting Chevrolet products specifically designed for the Indian market are in the pipeline." GM India sold over 15,000 cars in 2003, nearly double the number logged in the previous year. Besides the Chevrolet Tavera and Optra, GM India makes the Opel Corsa, Corsa Sail and Swing at its facility at Halol in Gujarat.
