Work on the 612-km long Dahej-Vijaipur Pipeline (DVPL) to transport gas from Dahej terminal of Petronet LNG Ltd (PLL) is likely to be completed well before it is scheduled inauguration in December.

NEW DELHI: "The pipeline project is expected to be completed within the target schedule," GAIL (India) Ltd said Friday. "The 612-km long and 42-inch diameter pipeline project is being undertaken at an investment of approximately 29.36 billion and has a gas handling capacity of 24 million standard metric cubic metres per day (MMSCMD)." One of the consortium partners in PLL, GAIL has been entrusted the task of distribution of gas from India's first LNG terminal. The five million tonnes capacity Dahej terminal in Gujarat is expected to receive the first shipment of LNG from Qatar by December or early January. The pipeline has three compressors at Vijaipur, 21 sectionalising valve stations, six intermediate pigging stations and would be passing through Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. "The pipeline will evacuate 20 MMSCMD of regasified LNG from PLL Terminal at Dahej and transport the same to Vijaipur from where the gas will be further distributed in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and NCR of Delhi through GAIL's existing pipeline systems," an official statement said. Though state-owned infrastructure major GAIL has diversified into telecom infrastructure and petrochemicals, natural gas continues to constitute its core business. During 2002-03, GAIL handled 63.25 MMSCMD of gas compared to 61.60 MMSCMD in the previous year. GAIL accounts for over 90 percent of the gas distribution in the country.
