BHUBANESWAR: Orissa, home to one of India's largest state-owned steel plants, could soon see the establishment of four more plants in the private sector. The total investment envisaged is 24 billion, and the four plants will produce 2.4 billion tonnes of steel between them. This would double the state's output from the 2.8 million tonnes the Rourkela Steel Plant currently produces. Memoranda of understanding (MoUs) for the new plants have been signed with Neepaz Metalics Private Ltd, Arati Steel Ltd, Acaw Industries Private Ltd and Deo Mines and Minerals Private Ltd, officials said. State steel and mines secretary R.N. Bohidar signed the MoUs. Neepaz Metallic proposes to set up an integrated steel plant at Chadrihariharpur village in the western district of Sundargarh with an annual production capacity of 240,000 tonnes. The plant would cost 4 billion and would be completed within three years. Neepaz Metallic also planned to set up a 25 MW thermal power plant for its own consumption, officials. Arati Steel proposes to set up a plant at Ghatikhal village in Cuttack district at an investment of 9 billion, as also a captive 50 MW power plant. The plant would have a capacity of 400,000 tonnes. Acaw Industries proposes to invest 8.24 billion on a one million tonne capacity steel plant and a 25 MW power plant at Gundichapara village in western Orissa's Dhenkanal district. It would be commissioned by next six years. Deo Mines and Minerals' proposal envisages a 3.16 billion steel plant of 400,000 tonne capacity at Kuanrmunda, near the steel city of Rourkela, in western Orissa's Sundergarh district. The state government is taking steps to provide land and mining leases to these companies so that their plants can be set up in the quickest possible timeframe, officials said. Orissa has an abundance of raw materials used in the manufacture of iron and steel like iron ore, limestone, dolomite, manganese ore, quartz and coal, besides refractories and ferroalloys of various types. Of the state's total reserves of 3,120 million tonnes of iron ore, only 6 to 7 million tonnes are currently exploited every year. There is tremendous scope for utilising these reserves for steel, pig iron and sponge iron plants, officials said. Steel companies like Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd., Mideast Integrated Steel Ltd., TISCO and L&T Ltd. had previously shown interest in setting up steel plants in the state but the proposals never fructified.
