Foreign varsities to help India save $7.5 Billion

By SiliconIndia,Sunday, 21 March 2010, 19:32 Hrs
New Delhi: According to the industry body Assocham, allowing foreign universities to set up their campuses in India will help the country save up to $7.5 billion (about 34,500 crore) foreign exchange annually that students spend on studying abroad, reports PTI.

Assocham President Swati Piramal said that students going abroad, cost the country a foreign exchange outflow of $10 billion annually and foreign universities campuses in India could prevent at least three-fourth of students from leaving the country for higher education. "It will not only dramatically enhance profile of higher education in India but help it save outflow of about $7.5 billion of foreign exchange per annum as large number of Indian students go abroad to receive higher education," Assocham said.

On March 15, the Union Cabinet approved a Foreign Educational Institution (Regulation of Entry and Operation) Bill, 2010, to allow foreign education providers set up campuses in India. The Cabinet clearance has paved way for its introduction in the Parliament. The chamber said over five lakh students choose to go overseas every year to obtain higher education which include professional courses in engineering, medical and management.

Assocham said several foreign universities have plans to enter India especially at places like New Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Chandigarh, Pune and Mumbai.

2: While healthy competition in Higher education is welcome, what is the rationale of Inviting Foreign Universities to be set up in India after 62 years of Independence? This our Government should have done two or three decades back when the fruits of quality higher education might have been reaped by this time. Definitely quality pays. An example can be found in Automobile Industry. For nearly 4 decades the same car with Mark1 to 4 was in Market. Thanks the vision of our Former Prime Minister Shri P.V.Narasimha Rao who was the Father of Globalisation in India, today there are hundreds of designs of cars ranging from Nano from Tata to Mercedes.

Naturally it is expected that Foreign Universities when established in India will help Indian Educational Institutes to keep pace with them in Quality as the saying goes PERFORM OR PERISH. Already we see there is stiff competition between Corporate run schools and Colleges and Government ones. One thing is sure the foreign Universities will charge exorbitantly the fee and there must be a check on this. But we should not forget the fact that some of us have a notion that RURAL IS BAD, URBAN IS BETTER AND FOREIGN IS BEST. But if we compare the quality of some of the Post Graduates in different disciplines from some Universities in UK,Australia Sweden and even in USA their standard is far below the ones from IITs,IIMs and some of the top Private run Institutes.

3:Dear Jagadeesh,
The worse courses around the world will be having similar quality. But the problem india is having is lack of enough number of good educators at that level. Many colleges in Inida dont have sufficient number of faculty and that results in poor quality. If we take the average quality of education it is still very low compared to most universities abroad.
The initiative is a good wakeup call to all the universities to put some effort to bring up their standard. IIT's education is not that great compared to a lot of foreign universities, but it is definitely better than many. In india we tend to overlook and over-market things that are not really true.
This initiative is by the most right one, and perhaps most practical one to have to push the rigor and quality in indian academics.
Cheers

4: Dear ajj:

I am not saying that all foreign universities standards are not high. You may be interested to know that to meet the mad rush in some countries for admission from developing countries they have also started SELF FINANCED COURSES.

By far the best Institutes in India are IITs,IISc,IIMs,TIFR etc., As an alumni of IIT Roorkee I know what standards IITs have.

Why students from IITs and IIMs get fabulous offers in jobs as well as higher education in Foreign Universities? Foreigners know the quality and reputation of these Institutes.

6: It is good decision from academic as well as financial angle. However, due care should be taken to allow good universities only to set up campuses. Fees to be charged by these universities should be comparable to those currently levied by Indian Universities.

8: if intent to allow these Univs is only to save money, then it is OK. but as per my vision, real intent is very harming. To put in brief,I see today various english convent schools are ruining our mindsets. These schools teach us and our children to see the things they want to see us as only the RIGHT,CORRECT thing. we do not see WRONG thing, process, behavior as WRONG, because it is not being taught. this is hampering our roots, our next generation. I do not know when we all will understand that we are killing ourselves. Still, these convent schools have failed to kill our generic brilliancy that we indians keep occupying, replacing the foreign students, nationals in their own countries. so how is it possible when these schools are already hampering our school education ? it is possible because of IITs,IIMs,RECs. These ELITE Schools are attended and served by brilliant students and Professors. so how to stop them? Government cannot instantly kill these ELITE schools, so now Guv has allowed the foreign Universities to kill upon our Grad Schools. These Foreign Institutes would attract Professors and then students. Just give it a thought, if all these foreign schools who are coming to our India have really been great in education, whole world would have gone to their nations, states. And their nations would have earned billions. Isn't it? so its not only about Market,Money, its much more than that....
