Faculty crunch at IITs: Quality engineers to decrease?
Mumbai: The prestigious centrally funded institutions - Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) - are currently facing a faculty shortage of more than 3000 professors. The Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has rather a grimmer scenario to offer. The statistics for instance, reveal that one-third of the teaching posts at the IITs and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are lying vacant.

The faculty crunch prevails in other major Indian institutes also. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) at Bangalore does not have even half the teachers it needs; the same situation prevails at the three Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPAs). In fact, all the centrally funded insititutes - whether it is the Indian School of Mines (ISM) at Dhanbad or the NITs that are spread across the country - are currently functioning without the necessary number of professors

The IITs have the largest share of the crunch with an overall deficit of 1284 teachers out of which 222 teachers fall short at IIT- Bombay alone. The Dean of the Faculty Affairs at IIT-Bombay, A.K. Suresh, says that the crunch is due to their policy of rolling recruitment where the post is filled as soon as a suitable candidate is found. "Moreover, we hire the faculty on contractual basis and take care of their immediate needs," he added.

By 2014, IIT-B will reach its expected maximum capacity of 8000 students and by then it would have to ensure enough number of professors to maintain a healthy student-teacher ratio. The situation runs out to a similar phase at IISc, which is a pioneer at the science and education front in contemporary technologically important fields, and the SPA, a specialized university, the only one of its kind that provides training in different aspects of human habitat and environment.

Experts have also mulled over the grim situation and feel that the inability to find adequate and qualified professors may seriously hamper India's ability to groom top-notch engineers, scientists and businessmen of the future.

2: Has the recruitment stopped or so called top-notch guys abandened IIT's for better salaries.

I don't believe in this myth of not finding suitable candidates for faculty positions at IIT.

How come then the same people who are interested in IIT's and couldn't find a placement there, find the best jobs elsewhere including faculty positions in coveted US universities?

People at the helm simply do'nt want to respect the merit of their own countrymen and simply fall for anything that comes from abroad. Sorry for the offense but it is true and unfortunate.

6: When the Institute like IIT and IIM look the candidates with highest quality of educational as well as reserach background for faculty post. Why they will appoint the candidate on contract.

When the good caliber candidate get more than IIT/IIM pay in corporate. Definately they will attract towards corporate and None will prefare contract job.

10: and how exactly do you define quality engineers? i think there has been too much debate on the topic. all said and done i think there is dearth of talent in India - especially Engineering talent!

So u wanna know quality engineers well here it goes. If u saw any international level compition(i am talking about only Programming). None of the indians make it in top 30 also exceptions are there. But mostly no one gets. And dont go with my name i m indian and cse student.

I think mentality of indian people is also a cause for not having quality engineers. Indian people want to earn easily without going for hard work, so they only learn wat is required to get a job n a handsome salary, if after getting a job i dont think engineers want to learn anything new until n unless they @ss r under fire... or they have fear of lay-offs

as for a prof, pay scale is poor, not given much of a respect, also in the above mentioned colleges they dont like to discuss new things with students unless students r enthusiastic or want to learn about a subject, in short i want to say profs r not teaching whole heartedly, the same case is other colleges as well

also i wud like to mention how r u going to get quality engineers wen the engineering syllabus has become outdated n obsolete, i dont know abt other engineering streams as a CSE engineering graduate, people think CSE n IT r same n their believes have reality bcoz as a CSE student i was made to study more IT related subjects (eg. E-commerces) n i was unable to get my CSE oriented Electives for which there was no specialized profs (Image Processing n many more)

Also i dont think a person studying engineering wud ever dream of becoming a prof, nobody does n everybody knows the reason.
