Bangalore: Facebook has yet again emerged as the most searched term and the most visited website of 2011 as reported by Experian Hitwise, a part of Experian marketing services in US.

Winning the title for the third time in a row, the search “Facebook” accounts for 3.10 percent. It is a 46 percent increase from previous year and the related variations of Facebook including “Facebook Login”, “Facebook.com” among the top 10 searches account for 4.42 percent of all the searches, which is a 24 percent increase from 2010.

“Navigational searches dominated the top searches as the users usually type the terms rather than typing in the URL in the browser bar”, said Simon Bradstock, General Manager of Experian Hitwise. Among the top ten terms “YouTube’’ made up its position from third to second in 2011. Other top ten searches include Craigslist, Yahoo, eBay and Mapquest.

The more ‘disturbing’ results to Google came with Facebook topping the list of most visited websites in 2011 followed by Google and then Yahoo. Pop star Justin Bieber heads the top public figure searches in the US.

The Google Zeitgeist 2011 for India gives the list of most searched people in India with actress Katrina Kaif  topping the list followed by Anna Hazare who is gaining a large momentum in the ‘fastest rising searches’. The others who made it to the top ten India list are Salman Khan, Poonam Pandey, Justin Bieber, Aishwarya Rai, Sachin Tendulkar, Kareena Kapoor and the late CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs.
