Ex-Chief of CWG, Kalmadi arrested
New Delhi: Suresh Kalmadi has been arrested for allowing and inducing corruption in the Common Wealth Games which was held in India, 2010. He has also been charged for cheating and conspiracy and is facing chargers under the Prevention of Corruption Act. CBI interrogated Suresh Kalmadi for the fourth time about the contracts which showed that the most expensive firms are being hired for equipment and services. It includes conspiring with a Swiss firm that supplied the Timing-Scoring-Results System (TSR) for the Games at exorbitant rates while reasonable bids from other firms were allegedly ignored. Kalmadi has been a suspect for a long time; the CBI believes they have found enough evidence against him to prove his corruption. Several of his close associates have already been arrested- including Lalit Bhanot, who served as the Secretary General of the Organizing Committee and V K Verma who was the Director General. A London-based firm named AM Films which was hired by Kalmadi to provide taxies, portable toilets and massive public TV screens for the ceremony. There was no official contract signed and a huge amount was transferred AM Films and its owner, Ashish Patel. Defending himself, he said that the officials from London had requested equipment at the last minute; he did not have the time to process a contract. AM Films charged phenomenal amounts for its services. The financial track record of Ashish Patel proved to be dubious. And then emails showed that Kalmadi's close associates were instructing Patel for what rates to charge the Committee. Kalmadi was summoned to the CBI headquarters April 15 but had to go out of station on that day. He was then called on April 19, but could not make it. Yet again, he failed to appear before the CBI for questioning April 20, saying he was unwell.
