Eveready merges two plants in Chennai

KOLKATA: Battery major Eveready Industries India Limited has decided to merge its two manufacturing units in Chennai and make commercial utilisation of the additional land which would earn the company more than Rs 25 crore. The company has decided to shift the entire manufacturing facilites at Industrial Estate at Guindy to Tiruvottiyur High Road in North Chennai and integrate the same with the facilities there, a spokesperson of Eveready India said today. The Tiruvottiyur plant, set up in 1952, has a current output of about 210 million batteries per annum while Guindy plant, set up in 1971, had a capacity of 240 million batteries per annum, she said. The integrated plant at Tiruvottiyur would now have a total capacity of 450 million batteries per annum and this consolidation would result in higher economies of scale and improved productivity. As a result of this integration, prime land of 8.39 acres at Guindy would be released for which the company has now entered into an agreement with a major developer of the city. An IT building complex would be constructed at the site with a total built-up area of more than 1,00,000 square feet. The developer would be making an upfront payment of Rs 25 crore to Eveready under the arrangement and would also provide 20 per cent of the built-up area to it for disposal at its discretion, the spokeperson said.
