WASHINGTON: While the word "outsourcing" turns one's attention to Bangalore and other Indian cities, latest statistics show that there are large and highly successful outsourcing firms in Europe. European offshoring firms, including France's Cap Gemini SA, were the biggest winners for large outsourcing contracts last year, according to an industry survey. Technology Partners International Inc, a Woodlands, Texas, consulting company that helps structure contracts for corporations and publishes an index of deals, said that US-based outsourcing firms won only a 44 per cent share of commercial deals, down from 71 per cent a year ago, though the overall value of contract awards rose. In part, European firms have been more successful at adapting to customer demands for business process outsourcing services, which involves the hand-off of financial, human resources or customer support transactions to outsiders. Traditional computer outsourcing turns over management of computers and networks to outsiders. Business process outsourcing accounted for nearly a third of large outsourcing contract values signed last year. Cap Gemini of France, Siemens AG and T-Systems International GmBH, both of Germany and Xchanging, of Britain, grabbed share from their US rivals in 2004, the report said.
