Ethnic Indian a deputy minister in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian Indian Senator T. Murugiah has been appointed a deputy minister in the government. Murugiah heads the Peoples Progressive Party's (PPP) youth wing and is a junior partner in Malaysia's ruling Barisan Nasional coalition. He was sworn in along with three others at a ceremony Wednesday, the Star newspaper reported Thursday. The PPP is a multiracial party representing all the major ethnic communities of Malaysia. Founded in Perak in 1953 as the Perak Progressive Party, it changed its name to People's Progressive Party in 1956. The PPP has been a constituent of the Barisan Nasional since 1972. Its Indian origin president K.V. Subramaniam was the deputy minister for housing and local government in Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's first government formed in 2004.
