Equity markets extend gains in afternoon trade

Mumbai: Indian equities markets Wednesday built on morning gains, with a key index rising 4.2 percent or about 385 points two hours before the closing bell. The 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) rose 384.61 points till around 1:45 p.m. Realty and infrastructure companies led the bull run with the realty stocks showing a rise of 8.8 percent. The broader-based 50-share S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) followed a similar trend after the opening, with a gain of 114 points or 4.11 percent. The BSE midcap index also picked up from its initial slow rise and posted an increase of 1.42 percent or 40.94 points. The same was the case with the BSE smallcap index, which grew by 1.16 percent or 38.63 points by 1:45 p.m. Other asian markets also demonstrated good growth with the Nikkei, key index of the Tokyo Stock Exchange ruling 3.15 percent higher while the Hang Seng, key index of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange continued its good show by posting gains of 4.38 percent.
