MUMBAI: With the IT scale of India on a rise, the graduating engineers have also raised the stake. Expecting a going rate of at a high of 6,60,000 at entry-level packages, it’s no wonder that IT majors and consulting firms have obliged to be the crem de la crem for these graduates. Experiencing a rise of over 15 percent from last year, the AC Nielsen Campus Track T-School `06 survey polled students from the country’s 73 leading engineering schools to understand the cause of this phenomenon. Prasenjit Das, Associate Director, AC Nielsen said, “What is interesting is that while the increase in average salary expectation is about 15 percent for dream companies, it’s as high as 25 percent for other companies.” The overall buoyancy in the economy of the country imbibed with the companies offering huge entry-level packages can be termed as the key factor adding to these expectations. The shift in this perception of dream recruitment, narrowed down to only the IT/consulting, has strongly affecting the already struggling industries like manufacturing, engineering, construction, electrical and others. One of the major constrains of these above sectors is in their inability to match the salary levels offered by these IT firms. Ajay Dhagat, Managing Director, Avera said, “Today, every engineering industry need 25 percent more engineers than it presently has.” Predicting the worsening of the situation, he also pointed out that with the software industry poaching, brick and mortar companies were forced to poach from SMEs, who suffer the most.
