Dubai: Emirates, the Dubai-based international airline, will start flying to Kozhikode in Kerala from July 1, the company announced on Monday. Kozhikode will be the 10th destination for the airline in India and the third in Kerala after Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. The airline said it would operate six non-stop flights between Dubai and the south Indian city a week. Emirates chairman and chief executive said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum said in a statement that the new service would help the expatriate Indian community in the Gulf. "We are delighted to be able to provide a non-stop air link between Dubai and Kozhikode, which will help increase trade opportunities, and also make it more convenient for the large non-resident Indian community in the Gulf to visit their families and friends," he said. There are around 5.5 million expatriate Indians across the Gulf region and a large number of them are from Kerala. Emirates will initially operate its Boeing 777-200 and Airbus A330-200 aircraft on the Dubai-Kozhikode route, offering over 4,000 business and economy class seats and close to 200 tonnes of cargo capacity per week in both directions. The airline currently operates 99 weekly flights from Dubai to nine cities in India. The other cities in India it flies to include Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Kolkata.
