New York: The total number of shipments of e-freight and paperless cargo consignments of Emirates SkyCargo, a division of Emirates airline, has touched the one million kilos mark, a one month milestone. The airline also passed the sixteen million kilo mark in total e-freight shipments. Emirates, which has achieved this landmark in just 19 months, is now seeing around 12 percent of shipments from compliant airports being sent using e-freight. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), because of lower costs of e-freight, the industry is able to save up to $4.9 billion every year. Key e-freight stations for Emirates SkyCargo include New York (JFK), Singapore, Zaragoza, Mauritius, London Heathrow, Hong Kong, Sydney, Munich and the carrier's hub in Dubai. Earlier this year, Emirates SkyCargo came up with a marketing campaign promoting e-freight throughout the industry. It highlighted the use of electronic data and messages replacing paper documentation out of air cargo. Before e-freight, the air cargo industry used the equivalent of 39 Boeing 747 freighters full of paper documents. E-freight is the future of the industry, and Emirates encourages its forwarding partners to adopt it, said Ram Menen, Emirates' Divisional Senior Vice President Cargo. It was in November 2008, when Emirates SkyCargo sending e-freight shipments from five airports. Today, there are 126 e-freight compliant airports worldwide, 38 of which are within Emirates' global network. By the end of 2010, more than 50 of its airports will be handling e-freight, claims Emirates.
